The guy he’d crashed into was sex on a stick. A big, tall, muscular stick. He was another one wearing a suit and had to be six foot five. He towered over Charlie’s respectable five foot eleven. The black hair, slate-blue eyes and five o’clock shadow were checking more of Charlie’s boxes. After a few seconds of literally drooling, Charlie realised the guy had hold of his arms as he’d steadied him.

            “Sorry,” he spluttered.

            “No problem at all. Are you okay?”

            He had a strange accent, a blend of American and British.

            “Was that guy giving you trouble?”

            Oh God, he’s nice as well. There had to be something wrong with him. Nobody was this perfect. He felt like a horny teenager again, wanting to get his hands and tongue all over that body. It took all his restraint to not start humping Spartacus’s leg. Until he had a name, ‘Spartacus’ was what he was going with. He had a gladiator vibe about him. Woof!

            “It’s fine. He did me a favour by sending me your way.”

            Oh my God, did I just say that? Kill me now!

            “I’m Sebastian.” He smiled, holding out his hand.

            Sebastian was an even hotter name than Spartacus. Charlie wasn’t sure why; it was just a fact. There was also something about Sebastian. He shook Charlie’s hand, which was formal, but didn’t seem out of place. The guy just oozed confidence. Charlie wondered if that confidence transferred to the bedroom. He needed to stop with those thoughts, or the leg-humping would be an embarrassing reality.

            “Charlie,” he said, introducing himself.

            “Are you here with anyone?”

            “Just my flatmate, who was humping the leg of some bear when I left him.”

            Sebastian laughed. It changed his face completely. This was a guy who was confident and controlled, yet when he let go, Charlie could see there was a fun side. Charlie wanted to know it all.

            “Can I buy you a drink?” Sebastian asked.

            Charlie would be stupid to say no. He didn’t know why a guy like this was giving him the time of day, but he’d had a shit week, so he was just going to go with it. Charlie agreed. Sebastian took his hand, which was sweet and possessive at the same time.

            The crowd seemed to part, probably because of Sebastian’s size. A few twinks spotted their joined hands and glared with jealousy. It was a heady feeling, and Charlie was enjoying it while it lasted.

“Let’s get this over with. What did you want?”

“Ouch. I can’t remember the last time anyone was happy to see me,” he groused without heat. “Except Steve the contractor. He likes me okay, but he’s being paid well. Our employees do well too, but sadly, they don’t like me at all.”

“I can’t help you with that. Sorry.”

Hank sipped his beer and shrugged. “Yes, you can. I’m extorting you, remember?”

“Oh…yeah.” I chuckled.

And fuck, I didn’t want to be amused. I didn’t want to like Hank at all, but it was hard not to appreciate his self-deprecating honesty. He emanated “nice guy” vibes with the right amount of edge. No wonder drunk me had gotten flirty with him. Fortunately, sober me knew he was more than I could handle.

Which was fine since Hank wasn’t interested anyway. He wanted my alleged star power, not me.

So why was I grinning like an idiot?

Fuck, I had a bad feeling my eyes were twinkling too. I had to rein that shit in, stat.

“So…let’s make a deal,” he said, thankfully unaware of my inner detour. “I need an Elmwood buddy. My dad gave me the all-clear to make my offer sexy, so…what’ll it be?”

I bugged my eyes out. “Sexy?”

“Yeah, something interesting. If it’s money, name your price. Tell me what you want in exchange for your time.”

You.

The word tripped to the tip of my tongue. I bit it back and swallowed it, clearing my throat to be sure it was gone.

“I just…want to make sure that whatever I blabbed while I was wasted off my ass stays between us.”

“Yeah, but I’ll do that for free. You can trust me.”

“I don’t know you,” I retorted.

“True,” he conceded, sipping his beer. “But you don’t really have a choice. I can’t prove that I won’t sell you out. It’s a trust thing. Let’s talk about the sexy angle, ’cause I need an Elmwood buddy like yesterday.”

“I can’t believe I’m asking this, but…what does an Elmwood buddy do?”

“He shows the new guy the ropes.” Hank leaned in. “Introduce me, give me tips on who’s who and what to avoid. I suck in Elmwood and I need a champion, a liaison…a friend. That can be you.”

I huffed in amusement, feeling strangely at ease. He was charming as fuck and I was not immune. “How can you suck in Elmwood? Everyone is cool there.”

He slumped on his stool. “I don’t know, but I’m even worse in Wood Hollow. I don’t get it. People in Denver like me just fine. Even you like me.”

“No, I like your hat.” I reached for his water and winked.

I fucking winked.

Me.

That was me flirting. Ugh. Bad, Denny. Bad.

I felt surprisingly relaxed with him. Like I had last weekend when I’d spilled my guts and…other things. The point was, I could talk to him without feeling immediately depleted, and that alone was a minor miracle.

Hank kicked my shin playfully. “Nah, you like me. You did last weekend, anyway.”

“I was drunk, and I’m still mortified. Go easy on me.” I took a swig of water as if I were knocking back whisky.

“I’ll try, but…you shook your dick at me, then fell buck-ass naked in my bed, so c’mon.”

My eyes had to be saucer-sized. “I shook my dick at you?”

He inclined his chin and winked in a touché move that made my cock swell against my zipper.

“A week later, I’m still thinking about it,” Hank drawled.

Whoa. Was he serious?

CHAPTER 1:

I bury my mother beneath the blazing heat of the summer sun. Just me and two other

men I paid to seal off the last tomb. There is no priest, but I know she would have

wanted one, so I murmur the same prayers over and over again—the wrong ones, but

they’re all I know.

Here lies Angelina Torres, the tombstone reads. Beloved mother.

That’s not even her real name. She hasn’t spoken her real name in years.

When the men finish sealing her in, they leave. I stand there for several moments

longer. The minutes stretch along with my shadow, beads of sweat dripping down my

neck and staining my shirt.

Here she is, one anonymous name out of hundreds, just the way she wanted it. A

niche that nobody will even know exists unless they want to find it. This is a poor man’s

cemetery. The rectangular tombs are stacked vertically on top of each other like

shipping containers, rather than spread over rolling green grass. An endless grid with

dozens of rows and columns, each one with a faded name.

She died of a heart attack at forty-six, except life had aged her so badly she had

looked sixty.

I memorize the shape of her tomb: every crack and groove, the color of the paint,

the loops of her name. I leave a single bouquet on the ground because I can’t hang it

specifically for her niche.

In a year, I’ll have to pay those same men to replace these flowers, to wash her

grave, to keep her bones here and not throw them out to make space for another poor

man’s wife. But I won’t be in this dead-end town next year.

I might not even be alive.

Good thing I’m not easily offended, and while I might be still on the fence about the cat, imagine my surprise when I discover the old man is Alan Beaker’s grandfather. Suddenly, my days aren’t just filled with on-field practice and rehearsals with the guy I’ve been crushing on hard, they’re also filled with time spent with him off the field too.

It isn’t long until I notice just how devoted to his family Alan is, and the more time I spend with them, the more they make me feel like I belong. Now if only I can get Alan to take a chance on us, then I can make this feeling last forever.

I smoothed down the front of my tux and adjusted my cuffs.

I was so ready for this.

There was a whine at the bathroom door and the scrabbling of claws. I waited for Marty to come barreling into the bedroom to fetch Squirrel like he usually did, but all I heard was another whine, more urgent this time.

“I’m coming buddy,” I said, swinging the door open. Squirrel eased himself to his feet and led the way slowly downstairs, and I let him out into the yard. While he was outside I filled his water bowl and checked my watch. We had to leave soon. I went back inside.

“Marty?” I called.

Silence.

While not knowing what Marty was doing wasn’t as much of a worry as it would have been during our college days, it was unusual—especially today of all days. At least a little bit of sound and motion still tended to follow Marty wherever he went. It was part of the Marty O’Brien experience, and I loved him for it.

“Babe?” I called again.

I knew he was dressed—the hanger for his tux was empty, and I’d had to listen to him grumble about wearing shoes on a Saturday—but now he’d vanished into thin air.

I checked my watch again. The sitter was due to arrive any minute, and if we didn’t hurry we’d be late. I let Squirrel back inside and said, “Where’s Marty, huh? Can you find him?”

Squirrel gazed at me with soulful eyes and then wandered over to his basket and sank down with a sigh.

So no help there, then.

It wasn’t like I was surprised; he was an old dog. His days of running wild with Marty were well and truly behind him. These days he preferred to be petted gently and fed snacks on the couch.

And who could blame him?

“Marty,” I called again. “Where are you? Hayley’s going to be here in ten minutes, and we need to be ready to go.”

Time management was still one of Marty’s weak points—that and donuts.
