I flick through photo after photo of perfection.

And I hate to say it, but Rowan makes me look good. The tats, the unruly hair, the confidence in how he holds himself.

He’s come a long way since high school.

Back then he was guarded and scared, and the only place he looked like he owned his skin was on the football field. Still, he always caught my eye. Always drew out that curious side of me that was attracted to what I didn’t know.

The first time I went to his house after school, I remember overhearing his dad asking who the little pretty boy was. And I knew by his tone what he was really asking.

First: is that kid gay?

Second: what the fuck is he doing with my son?

Tee Mills emerged from the bedroom, and all the air left Alvin’s lungs.

Tee Mills looked at him again. Again, that same moment of eyes locking, but he said nothing. The silence felt awkward and seemed to stretch on.

About the Author

I'm often awkwardly silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there's so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex. There's a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly. Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve. Additionally, I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Charlie cleared his throat. “Speaking of sunshine, it’s getting pretty late. Or early. We should probably get back. Don’t you think Sam and the others will be looking for us soon?”

I shrugged. “Probably not. But you’re right. It’s almost time to turn in for the night.” A moment passed. “But I’d be remiss if I didn’t take the opportunity to kiss my husband on such a lovely evening under the beautiful moon.” I leaned in and pressed a chaste kiss to his lips.

When I pulled away, Drew huffed. “Is that all?”

A tight laugh escaped me. “Just getting warmed up.” I leaned into Charlie again, and he tilted his head up, welcoming me. I touched our lips together, and after a second’s hesitation, I slid my tongue to meet his. He opened to me, our tongues easing together, tentatively at first.

My stomach clenched and roiled as I deepened the kiss, pulling Charlie close to me. I tightened a fist in the back of his shirt and let my free hand slip along his jaw, brushing the slight stubble with the pad of my thumb. Charlie’s breath tightened as we kissed, and his hands gripped my hips firmly.

We moved together with a few false starts, but as we kissed, something blossomed in my chest. I held him closer still, until our hips brushed one another and I became instantly aware of his erection, standing at attention between our bodies. My own cock ached and strained towards Charlie. I could hear his heartbeat as it sped up, thudding so loudly that I nearly lost control.

Drew cleared his throat. “Yes, well, that’s really enough of that.”

Our movement slowed, and I drew away reluctantly. We stared at each other, gazes locked for a moment, and I swiped at his lower lip with my thumb before taking his hand and turning to Drew. “I believe I’ve said this before, but you can seriously fuck off.”

His lips tilted high, the movement sending those damn wings crazy. “The shittiest,” he agreed. “I want to help you and get to know you in whatever way you’ll let me. What do you say?” A small shrug followed, the first hint of uncertainty I’d seen from him.

I tilted my head back, wincing at the pull, the bump forming on my head reminding me it was probably best I shouldn’t ignore my injuries. Heading to the hospital wasn’t going to put me at risk. Intellectually I knew that, but despite both time and distance, some habits were hard to break.

Looking back at Billy, who remained crouched at my feet, hand still touching me, I said, “Okay. I could probably do with getting my head checked out.”
