Excerpt:

Ciaran blinked tired eyes while he stood in front of his house, busying himself with packing the small, horse-drawn cart. I’m going to Dublin. It would take two days, but so what. He was still going to Dublin. He quirked his lips in a quick grin. The morning sun warmed the top of his scally cap, filtering through to his hair, and the birds provided a symphonic melody floating overhead in the trees.

While he set pillows atop folded wool blankets, Shannon’s behavior in the barn flooded his mind, the embrace, the look. What sort of a look was it anyway? It reminded him of something he’d read in one of his mother’s romantic poetry books. And Shannon had a hold on him like one of the women he’d dated.

He strode over to bales of hay, piled at the side of the barn, picked one up and brought it to the cart. Although Shannon’s behavior disturbed him, something else bothered him, too. It had forced him to confront Shannon yesterday. Did I want something more from him, more than a comforting hug? No, that’s absurd. Stop thinking about it. I’d just been upset is all.

He threw the hay in the back of the cart and strode off to grab his suitcase, sitting by the door of the house. But Shannon had a stiffy, didn’t he? Or was it just the shadows playing a trick on him? He frowned. It was hard to tell. Though, it wouldn’t be the first time. He’d noticed Shannon getting a stiffy around him before.

He grinned. Damn Shannon got more stiffies than anyone he knew. He tossed his suitcase into the cart and watched while it bounced on the pillows and landed next to a crate filled with food he’d packed earlier and his discarded jacket and waistcoat. It would be a hot day again.

As Ciaran patted down the blankets, he caught movement out of the corner of his eye.

Shannon strode out from the path connecting their houses, carrying a stuffed, white pillowcase, his dark linen shirt rolled up at the sleeves and tucked into his trousers, which were held up by braces. His boots clopped along as he walked.

Turning his attention to Shannon’s gait, Ciaran smiled. He was always trying to look so tough. “Shannon, are you ready?”

Shannon ambled over and patted the hindquarters of the small, brown horse attached to their cart before coming to Ciaran’s side. He peered into the back of the cart while tossing his pillowcase into it. “What’s all this then?”

“Well, I packed us some bread and cheese, a few apples and some pickles in case we get hungry. And just in case we decide not to stay at an inn, I packed some blankets and pillows.” Ciaran nodded once with a wide grin on his face. He’d made sure they were prepared for anything out there.

“Good God, Ciaran, you’d think we’d be traveling through the bloody wilderness with all that stuff. What about the money your da gave you? He didn’t want us sleeping outside, remember?” Shannon gave Ciaran’s hat a light ruffling.

Ciaran ducked out of his touch. “Uh, I know, but I sort of feel it’d be wrong to use it. I thought maybe we could save it and get something special for him.” He deserved it after everything he’d been through.

“Absolutely not, you know as well as I there are bloody Black and Tans out on the road. How would you feel if that precious locket of your ma’s got stolen? Or even worse, how would your da feel if you got killed?”

Hanging his head, Ciaran studied the dirt. Shannon always thought the worst would happen in every situation.

“No, he wants us staying close to the main roads and safe inside at night. That is what I promised him and that is what we’ll do.” Shannon huffed.

“Shite, Shannon, you’re always doting over me like a bloody mother hen. You and my ma, when she was alive.” Ciaran lowered his voice to a barely audible whisper, “Fine then.” He was a man now and people should start treating him that way.

“What was that?” Shannon dropped his head low to peer into his face.

Ciaran flared his nostrils, glaring at Shannon. “I said fine. But we’re going into town before we leave so I can get a book for the trip.” Shannon hated going into to town, but too bad. It would be a long trip and a book would definitely help.

Sighing, Shannon absently kicked at a rock. “Can’t we just go? I’m sure you can pick up a book in the first town we get to.”

“Oh, come on, you’ll survive. If you’d just talk to people in town, maybe they’d see you’re not so bloody terrifying after all.” Ciaran grinned. Why did Shannon always have to pretend to be so mean all the time? He was scaring people, that much he knew. He also knew, Shannon wasn’t mean at all. In fact, he was sweet and caring when he wanted to be. “That and cut your hair.” Though, he kind of liked Shannon’s hair. The color was so dark, it shined blue when he wasn’t wearing his scally cap.

“Hey, there is nothing wrong with my feckin’ hair. I like it,” Shannon said with a smile.

“Maybe if you’d wear some normal clothes and cut your hair, you’d get a girlfriend.” Ciaran curved his lips into a playful grin. He’d never seen Shannon even look at a girl, which made teasing him about it all the more fun. He climbed up onto the seat of the cart.

Frowning, Shannon said, “You know nobody would bloody want me.” He slowly followed Ciaran onto the cart.

Ciaran scoffed. He hated it when Shannon said things like that about himself. Shannon was a looker and was completely daft about it. “Why do you insist on reproaching yourself so?” He shook his head. “Ah well, good thing then. I can keep you all to myself.” He grabbed the reins, lifted his arms, and flicked his wrists once. “Let’s go, Missy.” The horse lurched forward and broke into a trot.

Shannon chuckled. In a soft voice, he said, “You have more of me than you know, my dear friend.”

With his brows furrowed, Ciaran studied him. What did that mean, exactly?

Mr. O’Kelly stepped out from the threshold of the farmhouse.

Waving, Ciaran said, “Bye, Da.” He glanced at Shannon, his heart aching just a little. He knew he’d always have him by his side. Shannon didn’t need to say things like that.

Mr. O’Kelly smiled and waved at them while they rode by.

Experimental Love, Book 2

My new fake boyfriend may not like me, but he needs me. There are worse foundations for a relationship.

Ned

Toni Fairweather is a liar and a fake. I suspected it the day we met, but when he lies to his friends about being my boyfriend, I know for sure. I’ll play along with his deception, but Toni will owe me – big time.

I have my own reasons for needing a boyfriend. Someone who can handle me. Someone who can keep me in line. Toni is demanding enough to fulfil every requirement.

I don’t need to like the man… to obey him.

Toni

I never meant to fake a relationship with the lead singer of a local rock band. But the fib popped out over lunch with my best friend, and now I’m expected to present my new boyfriend at his engagement party next month.

The good news? I’m not the only one in need of a date.

Being boyfriends for a month shouldn’t be hard, but I do have one condition: this won’t be some fake boyfriends deal. I want a real relationship, and Ned’s going to give it to me.

Excerpt:

“All I’m saying is, if we happen to be approached by a record label while we’re at the music festival next weekend, it won’t be the worst thing in the world.”

Rolling my eyes, I yank open the door to the building where my friend, Logan, rents a small office. The sooner I find him, the sooner I’ll have an excuse to hang up on Johnny. “We don’t need to belong to a label to be a successful band,” I remind him. “Our EP is doing well on all the streaming services. We’re making money. We’re playing gigs. What more do you want?”

“I want to hear our songs on the fucking radio, Ned.”

I grit my teeth and resist the urge to groan aloud. This is exactly what I feared when Johnny and the boys asked me to join Fifth Circle as their permanent front man two years ago. They’d sworn they were content to be a pub band, playing music on weekends and having a good time. The claim proved true—until recently.

My fingers tighten around the bottle of scotch in my left hand as I stalk deeper into the building. The place is a rabbit warren. Designed as a co-working space, it’s bursting with entrepreneurs intent on building their own mini empires. It seems everyone wants to be on top of the pile these days.

“Since when do you have aspirations of rock stardom?” I ask Johnny as I scan the desks for any sign of Logan.

“Since my wife left me for some arsehole with a Porsche,” he snaps. “Nothing says fuck you like having a song on the radio that literally has fuck you in the chorus.”

“Except I’d be the one singing the chorus, and most stations bleep that shit out, anyway.”

“Not all of them,” he grumbles. “Besides, she’d get the point.”

Stopping in a less crowded area, I hold the phone closer to make sure Johnny can hear me over the background noise. “I agreed to play the Autumn Skies Festival because I know you’ve been through hell and need to blow off some steam. But you never said anything about using it as a steppingstone to bigger things. I never agreed to that.”

“Don’t you ever get hungry anymore?” Johnny hisses in my ear. “When we were kids, playing in our first band and pissing off the neighbours, you were damned near starving. Out of all of us, you were the one who was going to make it. You were the only one who ever really tried.” He pauses with a frustrated sigh. “What the hell happened to you in Sydney?”

My jaw clenches, and I swallow past the sudden constriction in my throat. “I grew up. Realised I’m better off on a stage where the lights aren’t bright enough to blind. That’s where I intend to stay.”

A tense silence beats between us as I wait for his response.

“Fine.” Johnny heaves a sigh. “It was just a suggestion, anyway. You’re so bloody dramatic.”

Closing my eyes, I release a pent-up breath of my own. Dread already fills my gut every time I think about going down to Byron Bay for next weekend’s festival, knowing my ex-boyfriend will be there. It’s been more than three years since I saw Zac. Not since the night I fled his house, blocked his number, and flew home to Brisbane. We never even broke up. Not officially.

“I’m gonna go,” I tell Johnny, hoping he won’t notice the rough edge in my voice. “If I don’t find Logan soon, I’ll end up lost in this maze forever.” We say a quick goodbye and I slide the phone into my back pocket.

A man sitting behind a nearby desk waves me over. “You’re looking for Logan Delaney?” he asks. At my nod, he gestures to a hallway behind me. “He and Tony are at the end of the hall.”

“Thanks, mate.”

“Watch out for Tony,” the man adds as I’m turning away. “He’s a bit extra today.” The slight exaggeration is the only variation in the otherwise bored tone.

“Appreciate the warning.” I have no idea who he’s talking about. Not that it matters. I’m only here to deliver the scotch to Logan. Then I’ll be off again.

The door at the end of the hall has a laminated sign with Logan’s business name and a cheery ‘Come on in’ underneath. I knock before easing the door open.

“For fuck’s sake, Rodney. I’m sorry I missed your housewarming.” The clipped voice is sharp enough to lash the air and I pause, unsure if it’s safe to step inside. “I got caught up at a friend’s place and lost track of time. You know how I get when I’m distracted.”

I snort at the lame excuse. This must be the very extra Tony.

Deciding there’s no actual danger, I step through the doorway and close the door behind me. The office is small but modern. There’s enough room for two large desks on one side. The opposite wall is taken up by a small kitchenette, some storage cupboards, and a couch. The desk at the far end, which must belong to Logan, is currently vacant.

A slender man sits behind the second desk, directly in front of me. His long fingers drum softly against the surface of the wood as he presses a mobile phone to his ear with the other hand. “Of course, I wanted to be there,” he says, not bothering to look up at me. “What could possibly be more appealing on a Saturday night than celebrating you and Leif putting your toothbrushes in the same cup on a permanent basis?”

My brows lift at the barely concealed sarcasm in the man’s voice. If this is his idea of an apology, Rodney should be telling him to get bent right about now.

Crossing my arms, I take a moment to study the man before me. Platinum blond hair is neatly styled above dark sculpted eyebrows. Cheekbones slash across smooth, alabaster skin. The sharp angles provide a contrast to the generous pink mouth, which is currently pursed in displeasure. I’d love to call him pretty—he’s beautiful really, on the outside—but the indifference in his tone and the lack of genuine remorse in his attitude begs a harsher word: fake.

CHAPTER ONE

Shadows

Yi

There was a peace in the silence I didn’t fully embrace. I had made it through the past year, only to fall prey to the curse. In this sleep state, I can find some solace and be free of the guilt that riddles my heart and soul. I can fill my days and nights with memories of my love, safe—however unhappy—in the knowledge there is nothing I can do to save him now. Gods, I wish things were different.

Ayo

He watched as the shadow approached, silent and anonymous under the secretive light of the full moon. It slid across the surface of the still waters of the river like a thief in the night. Ayo wondered who it might be—a new resident or something else entirely?

The arrival of new residents had stopped suddenly a few months ago. He remembered a time, shortly after his own arrival over a year ago, when the king and his body of royal guards had flooded the isle with new outcasts. Some had never made it to the banks of the Isle of Oublie, choosing to try their luck in the waters of the Malvado River, only to find out that the beasts living there were every bit as ruthless as their king. Wouldn’t death be a better outcome than life on the isle? It was a question he had asked himself many times since. Like those men and women, he had come close to jumping overboard, but in the end that tiny thread of hope and self-preservation that still clung to his heart had won.

Ayo followed the shadow’s progression as it made its way, slowly and in sputters, to the bank and then onto land, heading toward the settlement that was so small and pitiful it couldn’t even be called a village. A couple dozen huts had been built haphazardly as far from the water as possible on the tiny island, a sad collection of decrepit buildings put together from sticks, mud, grasses, and whatever other materials were available at the time. When it rained, some of them went down with it, melting like the snowmen he had once seen in the mountains, and had to be rebuilt again. Not that it mattered since most of the isle inhabitants didn’t have long to live anyway. Disease, the elements, or pure heartbreak regularly took their souls to the afterlife. Doggedly, Ayo remained healthy and thriving. At least physically. Inside he was dead. His heart had shriveled to the size of a walnut, just big enough to continue pumping blood through his veins and keep him alive.

With mild interest, Ayo crouched behind bushes and tracked the shadowy figure all the way to the middle of the settlement. Nothing ever happened on the isle other than the routine disposal of the dead which involved a gruesome feeding of the river beasts. Despite everything, he felt the teeth of curiosity gnawing at him. Who could that be and why was the visitor on the isle? When the shadow disappeared within the hut he claimed as his own, Ayo’s dormant heart skipped a beat or two. Had the king sent an assassin to finish him off? But if so, why? He was not going anywhere, and the odds of him living long were strongly against him. His ruthless king wouldn’t be so frivolous as to waste his money on a hired killer.

There was only one way to find out who it was. If it was indeed a death emissary from the monarch, so much the better. Shortening his miserable life would be a welcome turn of events, even though his self-preservation instinct rebelled against it. Ayo emerged from his hiding place and ducked under the low doorway of his shelter to face the mystery visitor.

“Looking for me?” It was darker inside than under the moonlight. His hut had no light or windows. When he’d first arrived on the isle, it had been the only shelter not taken—a square box made of metal sheeting and cardboard with a hole on the roof to allow heat to escape.

The dark figure inside had collapsed in a corner with his back against the thin wall and legs stretched in front. “Ayo Mkuu?” The man’s ragged breath filled the silence of the night.

“Who wants to know?” His initial fear had been replaced by curiosity. Whoever this was, he was obviously not in any condition to attack Ayo, much less kill him. And how did he know in which hut to find him? “Are you a king’s man?”

Another crackling of breath. “I come from the prince.”

Ayo’s heart stopped beating for a second. The prince? His prince?

“Prince Uzurri is in grave danger.”

“Danger? From who?” The stranger had mentioned the one thing that would not only pique Ayo’s curiosity but also command his full attention and concern. “Why would he be in danger with all those king’s guards around him?”

The stranger coughed. “The whole kingdom is in danger. Fallen under a spell from Mulluk.” He coughed again. “I won’t last long now, Ayo. I’ve been infected with the curse—everyone has. Even the prince.”

Ayo’s breath caught in his throat. Curse? What was the stranger talking about? “Who are you? And what do you want from me?”

“I’m Jìn, and I came to ask you to save the prince. Save the kingdom.”
