Ever since my sister was killed, I've been on a path of self-destruction. They don't call me after Death for no reason. I've slain more men than I can count, and I did it with a smile. I'm broken, destroyed, living in torment and I don't deserve one moment of happiness—until Isaac walks into my life, and I find I want all of that and more.

But my path of destruction has put my club on the radar of people who will kill us all without a second thought. I never considered the consequences of my war with them, until Isaac got in their path. Now, the only good thing I've ever had in my life might be taken from me, and there's nothing I can do about it.

Guilt claws at my heart, threatening to squeeze it until it can’t beat any longer and nausea climbs up my throat. For a moment, it’s her blood on my hands and my breath rips out of me as I try to calm my racing heart. Fuck, I’m going to have a fucking heart attack if it keeps pounding this hard.

A hand touches my shoulder. My attention ensnared, I snap my eyes in the direction it comes from and see a familiar face.

Spider.

Dark hair, brown eyes, and a square jawline that tightens when he takes in my heaving chest greet me.

I watch as his brows draw down, his movements like he’s trying to soothe a feral animal. Maybe that’s all I am. An animal. Some days, I feel more beast than human.

“You with us, Prez?” he asks, his voice soft, as if he’s worried about speaking too loudly.

I shake myself and push Tillie out of my mind. That fleeting moment is all I allow my sister to have. Anything more than that is dangerous. Anything more than that and I can’t keep my carefully crafted walls in place.

“Yeah,” I grind out the word through my teeth. “I’m fucking fine.”

He doesn’t look convinced. I don’t blame him for that. These days the line between sanity and chaos is thin. My brothers think they’ve seen me lose control, but they’ve never seen me fully unleash the demons that exist within me. They’ll never see them either. Letting those monsters out of the box would bring with it a shit storm I don’t think I could keep hold of.

I keep those fuckers on a tight leash, but they are always battling for dominance. Sometimes, I think it would be easier to give in to them, to let them have that control, but the fear that I would lose the last piece of my soul keeps me from letting it happen.

“You need me to finish?” Spider asks, his eyes straying to the other man sitting on the floor next to the bastard I just stabbed sixteen times. From the sincerity in his eyes, I can see he means it.

My gaze shifts to the vice president patch on his black leather kutte, to the one percent patch that tells the world that we’re outlaws. They’re more than just patches.

They’re everything.

Brotherhood.

Loyalty.

Strength.

They represent everything we are.

I head straight for my room and Ethan trails behind me, stopping at the doorway.

Everything is clean and neat and the large bed is grey, grey, and more shades of grey.

I dive onto it like it’s the most welcoming bit of furniture in the house. It is the most welcoming. It’s as depressed-looking as I feel. We understand each other.

Rolling onto my back, I sniff. Ethan’s still there, watching.

He rocks on his heels like he’s about to go, then shrugs and strides into the room. The comforter dips under him as he perches next to me.

“I’m sorry.”

“What for?” I drape an arm over my eyes so I don’t have to look at all that undeserved kindness in his expression.

“You have to give up everything, while I gain everything.”

“Gain?” I splutter. “What are you gaining?”

The mattress shifts slightly. “It’s a really big house, and Dad travels quite a bit . . .”

Was he saying . . .

I rethink all the weekends Tom stayed in Cubworthy. Ethan might have got day trips with Mum, but the rest of the time he’d been alone in a mansion.

I drop the arm from my face. That slightly square jaw is set tight and he’s frowning into space.

He shakes it off and looks down at me. “Did you leave a lot of friends behind?”

I shove myself into a sitting position and cock my head. Will he still think he’s gaining something when I tell him?

He waits for my answer, taking off his cap and sliding his fingers through his hair before resettling it.

“It’s not about how many I left behind. It’s about how much they meant to me.”

He nods. “Sure.”

“I’ll miss my boyfriend most.” My ex-boyfriend, now.

I wait for a reaction, and I’m satisfied there is one. His body shifts as if on the brink of recoiling. There. He’s changing his mind about having company.

The bed moves again and I think Ethan is getting up, but he’s still there in the corner of my eye. His cheeks are flushed.

I look directly at him and raise a brow.

He lurches to his feet and hoofs out of my room.

Rio slept terribly.

He was given only a pallet in a storeroom with a handful of other new "servants," and there was no ventilation or light except for a single candle. They were somewhere on a lower floor in the fortress, near the kitchens, although where they were, they could neither see nor hear anyone else.

When he did finally sleep, he dreamed of a dry place locked in darkness. His throat felt like sandpaper and his lungs like dust, and he choked and gasped for a single drop to wet his tongue. In his dream he was trapped, thirsting and hungering in the dark, screaming silently to get out. […]

When Rio awoke, it was utterly black in the storeroom. He could hear the breathing of the few other people trying to sleep in the barren room. As his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he realized that the door was open. He looked around, eyes straining, trying to detect any sign of a guardae in the darkness.

As quietly as possible, he pushed himself up and stood, making his way to the door dimly outlined by faint light in the passage beyond. He gingerly stepped over his fellow "servants," making his way to the corridor. Once outside, he took a deep breath to center himself and considered his excuses for being up and about if anyone challenged him.

He wondered why no one was guarding them. […]

He walked, not really knowing where he was going. There was literally no one in the halls, and he couldn't understand why.

His eyes detected something flitting across the field of his vision, a silhouette in the darkness, moving so fast he wasn't sure that he'd seen it. His ears strained, but he heard nothing. He paused for a moment near one of the few lit wall sconces, taking comfort in the little light he had.

Without a sound, a pale face came into view just at the edge of the flickering light, distorted by fangs and bright crimson eyes. Rio froze, his breath caught in his chest. There was a reason the Ishima had left them alone for the night.

The nighttime guardia were not human at all, and were more effective than any soldier.

The vampire did not move to attack Rio, instead grinning and putting his finger up to his lips. He tipped his head to the side, his eyes wide and utterly delighted, as he stepped forward. He lightly moved into the light, almost dancing, stopping just in front of Rio, looming like a gleeful executioner. Rio froze, knowing that his only defense would be to channel Astara’s Light.

He also knew it wasn't enough—the Light would disable his attacker, but it would not kill him. Mentally, he formed the picture of the temple door in his mind, preparing to open it. But the vampire only leaned into him and whispered in his ear softly.

"Run."

Rio turned and obliged.

Ash picked up the board, threw it under his arm, and strode to his backpack. As he set the board down, he glanced at his neighbor and flipped his blond hair up over one side of his head, the long ends splashing against the top of the wetsuit.

The neighbor hugged his knees tight with his head lowered.

“Hey, you sleeping?” He bent over the backpack, his hair dripping into dry sand.

The neighbor lifted his head.

A gust of wind blew over them, so strong it drove Ash forward.

The brim of the neighbor’s baseball hat fluttered and flew off, throwing the hood off with it, making his long, black bangs swirl up around his head. His gaze caught on Ash, the large, brown eyes, and thick lashes under straight brows, vulnerable, but intense. He lifted his face, every bit as perfectly laid out as if it were a doll, the cheeks holding a slight flush over porcelain skin.

Gorgeous. Ash whispered, “Holy shit.” He gawked, unable to move, his breath caught in his throat, his heart pounding.

The neighbor jerked around in the sand.

Ash blinked hard and scrambled for the hat. As he snatched it in his fingers, the perfect doll appeared in his vision again, this time gazing at him up close, too close. He plopped his butt in the sand, leaning on one hand, gaping at the vision in front of him.

The perfect doll sat next to Ash, lips parted, his dark, expressive eyes wide. “Uh, thank you.”

“Wh-what’s your name?” He stared at the doll, unable to look away, his heart thumping in his ears. Jesus, he needed to get a grip on himself.

“Micah.” His neighbor held out his hand.

He stared at Micah’s hand and placed his own inside it. He squeezed.

“Um, my hat.” Micah ripped his hand free. “Please.” He shimmied away from Ash. “Can you give it to me?” He dropped his head forward, letting the dark bangs cover his expressive eyes.

“Oh, yeah, sure.” What an idiot. As he flinched, he handed the hat to Micah, his other hand still tingling from Micah’s touch. He gulped hard and looked around him, fighting to find his voice, to calm the pounding in his chest. “Um…”

“You don’t want to be friends with me.” Micah placed the hat over his head and brought the hood up to cover it, then twisted around to face the surf.

“Wh-why wouldn’t I?” Did he hear that right? He stared at the back of Micah’s head.

“You just don’t.” Micah said, his voice unsteady, as if holding back tears.

And so, the rudeness was back. “Then why the fuck are you out here and not back at the beach in front of our apartments? You’re the one that told me to come here.” What the hell is wrong with this guy? He scowled at the back of Micah’s black, hooded sweatshirt.

“If you think I came here to watch your sorry ass surf, you’re mistaken,” Micah said, his voice wavering.

“Fine.” He didn’t need this shit from him. If Micah wanted to be like that, then fuck him. With a growl, he stood up, stomped back to his board and backpack, seized them up and trudged to his Jeep.

I was a strong man. But right now, I definitely wasn’t made of ice.

And it would have taken someone with a stronger willpower than Gandhi not to check out a half-naked Tyler Bannings standing a few feet away. All that golden skin lying over perfectly sculpted muscle. I swallowed. Hard.

“Like what you see?” He smirked.

Fuck. It looked like the direction of my attention had not escaped his notice.

I managed to stop my cheeks from igniting. I raised my gaze to stare straight at him. He was still smirking, and I had an overwhelming urge to wipe that smug grin off his face.

“Yeah, I do, actually.” The words were out of my mouth without me stopping to think through the consequences.

His smile dropped. “Wait, what?”

Now was the time to backtrack and turn this into a joke. But part of me liked the fact I had the cocky bastard flummoxed. I could always claim the joke later.

“I said I do like what I see.” My voice came out husky.

His Adam’s apple bobbed. “You’re shitting me, right? You’re just messing with my head?”

He’d started breathing harder, his chest rising and falling as he watched me. My smart-ass teammate was the most freaked out I’d ever seen him. Even more freaked out than when he thought the New Zealand coach disapproved of him.

And that caused anger to flash through me.

I quirked an eyebrow. “What? I thought you’re this enlightened, woke generation. You’re not going to tell me you’re homophobic, are you?”

His eyes narrowed. “You are messing with me.”

I shrugged. “If that’s what you want to believe.”

He licked his lips. I couldn’t help my gaze dropping to his mouth. When I looked back up, his eyes had heated.

Holy shit, maybe I’d read this situation wrong. He couldn’t be, could he?

Bannings stepped toward me, his dark eyes not leaving my face.

“The wedding is canceled.” He ground out through clenched teeth, still not slowing his steps.

“I… but…” Isaac seemed taken aback by the simple statement but he quickly caught back up. “Where are you going?”

“I have to find the Senator and tell him what’s happening. I have to get Ashtyn’s mother for her. Then I have to deal with the guests and the wedding coordinator and the...”

“No.” Isaac grabbed him by the arm and pulled hard enough that Aaron was forced to stop walking mid-stride.

“Excuse me?”

“I said no.” Isaac tilted his chin up when Aaron glared at him, not bothering to hold back his temper any longer.

“And since when do you get to order me around?”

Isaac narrowed his eyes at the condescending question, “I’m not trying to order you around, Aaron. I’m just trying to get you to slow down and think this through. You can’t go stomping into the chapel and announce the wedding is off in this kind of mood. It won’t look good and you’ll regret it.”

“What other option do I have?” He snapped.

“You let me sneak you out the back. We take a car and get out of here before anyone realizes you’re gone. Nobody sees how upset you are. The media won’t get anything they can use against you in the press. That’s your other option.”

Aaron narrowed his eyes skeptically, “What about everything else? What about the vendors and the payments? What about the guests? Who’s going to handle them?”

“My job is to protect you. You’re my priority. But I’ll make sure my guys handle everything else so you don’t have to. I promise.”

Aaron wasn’t sure why those two simple words got to him so much but they did. It had been a long time since anyone had made him a promise and then delivered. But something told him that Isaac Chinn wasn’t the kind of man to go back on his word.

Jess Bryant is an avid indoorswoman. A city girl trapped in a country girl's life, her heart resides in Dallas but her soul and roots are in small town Oklahoma. Excerpt:

“So what are we watching?”

Rafe drops onto the cushion next to mine, and I hate that he can’t do something as simple as that without my breath catching. Someone needs to turn the hose on me.

“Dunno. There has to be a series or something that looks interesting.”

“You want to start a series with me, Rafe? Wow. That sounds like a big commitment, and I’m not sure our relationship is ready.”

He blinks at me.

I grin. “Kidding. Obviously. Carry on.”

He’s quiet as he scrolls through the options, and I notice him glance at me from the corner of his eye a couple of times.

“What?”

He jumps at being caught. “Just thinking.”

“About?”

“Whether your mouth has always been so out of control.”

“There’s a lot about my mouth you don’t know.”

Rafe shakes his head. “I walked into that one, didn’t I?”

“Less walked and more steam rolled, but yep.” I adjust my baseball cap, then point at the screen. “You’re still as indecisive as ever.”

He huffs and tosses me the remote. “You choose.”

“Fine.” I hit play on some Sci-Fi show he’d hesitated over.

We get through most of the first episode before he speaks again.

“Is this weird?”

I know he’s talking about us. Being here. The space between us. So many things are rolled into that one question that I hesitate on how to answer at first.

“Oh yeah.” Might as well agree. “I think we’ve well and truly passed that line.”

“At least it’s not just me.”

“Why do you think it’s so weird? We spent most of our lives together, but for some reason the last few years are the ones that seem to count.”

He frowns. “I don’t think that’s it.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, I think they only count, because the ones before them counted more. Maybe. Does that even make sense?”

“I think so.”

“Like …” He tugs at his hoodie sleeve, looking unsure. “Even though this feels weird, I’m still glad I’m here.”

That smooth motherfucker. This is a serious conversation. I shouldn’t be smiling. I shouldn’t. “Me too.”

“Which makes it weirder.” He lets out a frustrated sound. “Shouldn’t I be making excuses to bail, instead of wishing things could go back to how they were?”

Every word he’s saying lightens some of that pressure on my heart. Maybe we’re not doomed. Maybe our friendship really can be given a jumpstart.

“I wonder if your need to be here is the same as mine.”

He looks up at me, pinning me with those dark eyes that I can’t stop dreaming about. “Which is?”

“I missed you.”
