“So tell us what’s happened.” Dad straightened in his chair and shifted into his authoritative all-business voice.

Oliver nodded. “Two days ago Sofia and I were in Central Park for a photo shoot for her next album. It attracted a fair amount of attention because word spread on social media that we were there. Three guys rushed us from nowhere. Thankfully we were able to manage it, but they almost had Sofia in an SUV before my guys got their act together.” Panic flashed in his eyes. “We were in the northern part of the park and regular vehicles aren’t allowed up there, so how did they even get in? And why can no one figure out who they are? It’s like they disappeared.”

“Has anything unusual been going on?” Mom picked up with the questions. “Recently fired people with a grudge? Business deals that went sideways?”

Oliver shrugged. “No more than usual. My team’s vetted the people who have left the company—both fired and leaving on their own—from the past six months. No red flags. As for business deals. We turn things down all the time, but none of it seems out of the ordinary. We can re-review if you think it’d reveal anything.”

“Why don’t you let us do it?” Dad asked. “If it’s someone inside your organization, you might get false information back.”

“Won’t you raise more suspicions?”

Mom and Dad looked at each other.

“No.” Dad smiled, and Oliver seemed to relax. “Just tell us the employees and the companies we need to look at and we’ll take it from there. What about your personal security?”

“I’m worried they can’t do the job. There were four of them in the park and… well.”

“We’ll examine security from top to bottom.” Mom looked to Dad. “I’ll take physical security. We’ll use Theo’s expertise to examine your IT network and see if there’re any red flags there.” Her eyes darted to me as she mentioned my name, and I nodded.

Oliver’s brow wrinkled as he tried to reconcile that bit of information. “You’re a security expert?” It was cool he looked at me as he asked and not to my parents. He managed to not sound condescending either, even though he wasn’t sure.

“Yes, sir.” I reached into my back pocket, pulled my wallet, and fished out a business card. These were for show, but I kept a couple on me just in case. “I have a consulting firm.” I handed over the card and he studied it. It was plain white with “Theodore Reese—Cyber Security Specialist” in two lines at the center of the card. In the lower corners were an email address and phone number.

“He’s been brilliant with computers for years, and he’s taken courses at MIT for the past two years.” I didn’t get to see Mom be the proud parent very often, so it was nice to see her light up talking about my accomplishments.

“Impressive.”

“Thanks.” We traded nods.

“I’m sending you to Alaska.”

The next morning, Roberta glares at me from behind her desk. The expression is one hundred percent do not fuck with me, and I resent it to the core of my being. If anyone’s been fucked with, it’s me.

“Alaska?”

“You’re lucky it’s not somewhere farther,” she says. “After your outburst last night, the studio is very unhappy. A bar fight with your director is not the kind of publicity they want right now.”

“It wasn’t a bar fight. He was being a drama queen. And I’m not exactly tap dancing for joy either.” In fact, I’m pacing on the rug. Sitting still is impossible. My whole body feels electric with anxiety.

“Yes, but you don’t stand to lose three hundred million dollars when this film flops. The premiere weekend box office numbers aren’t good.”

“That’s not my fault. If they hired someone who knew how to write dialogue better than a middle schooler, we’d be in much better shape.”

“That may be.” She knows as well as I do the script for Shadow League 4 was written and rewritten by no less than nine people over the last two years. Over the course of a bloated nearly-three-hour final cut, my character, supposedly a mafia son out for revenge, had done everything from drive a tank through the jungle to perform open-heart surgery on his assassin girlfriend while they were hiding out from the bad guys on a glacier. It was nonsensical. “But you calling your director a—” She glances down at a legal pad on her desk. “—talentless prick jockey in front of the entire world means it’s easy enough to pin the failure on you. And then you decide to pick a fight with him at a dive bar.”

“How many times do I have to tell you it wasn’t a fight? He made it—"

She cuts me off. “And that, in turn, will make it very difficult for you to work on any future franchises at this level again. How badly do you want to keep your job, Damian?”

She’s right. It’s already starting. The headlines this morning when I checked them still included recaps from the Cannes incident, but also featured new eye-catching questions like Damian Marshall in Barroom Brawl and Is it Time to Cancel Damian Marshall?

I sink into a chair. “Hawaii is farther. I could go to Hawaii.”

Unfortunately, though, Roberta is bulletproof. She’s been around the block too many times to be swayed by my appeal. Instead of melting and booking me a jet to Honolulu, she arches a perfectly plucked eyebrow—quite the feat considering Roberta’s face hasn’t moved in at least the last thirty years—and says, “Would you rather it be North Dakota?”

I cross my arms over my chest. “No need to say hurtful things like that. I thought we were friends.”

“I’m never friendly with the talent. Wouldn’t want you to get the wrong idea about how this relationship works.”

I was unprepared for Kingston’s smirk to turn sensuous. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you’re a masochist who gets off on losing to me.”

The claim was preposterous, but it outraged me with the presumptuousness of it. I vibrated with the force of my rage, resenting that everything in my life had become tied up in one infuriating individual who refused to submit to me. “I fucking hate you.”

Kingston arched against me with a sensuous moan. “Yeah? Then hate me harder.”

Confusing as it was, I couldn’t ignore that my body reacted to his gratuitous display. “What?”

“Harder,” he gasped like he was begging me to fuck him. He rocked his hips against mine with another breathy, pleading noise.

My eyes widened when I felt Kingston’s hard length pressing against me. Part of my brain was shocked that maybe Kingston was gay, since I had never heard rumors about him being with a partner of either gender. But the realization of what I had done to him sent a jolt of adrenaline rocketing through my system. Having the power to arouse him opened up new avenues to get even with him. I may have been straight, but the prospect of dominating Kingston fired me up like nothing else ever had.

The thought of having him under me, begging me for pleasure, stoked my lust into a roaring blaze. It was a powerful aphrodisiac, swaying me into questioning the merits of our latest battle taking place with our bodies rather than in a stadium. Even the rational part of my brain was on board with the idea, making the argument that a hole was a hole, and defeating him in bed would provide a new level of satisfaction.

Revealing none of my interest or intentions, I needed to make sure we were on the same page. “Are you offering yourself to me?” When he didn’t answer, I groped his ass and pulled his body flush against mine. It didn't appall me as I would have expected considering I had only been interested in women in the past. Instead, I flew high on the power trip of knowing I had him at my mercy if he wanted sexual gratification from me.

“I want you to fuck me like you hate me.” He pressed himself against me, allowing him to tug on my earlobe with his teeth.

If there’s one thing Devon likes most, it’s chaos. She has a chaotic mind, messy house, and throws her characters into every calamitous situation possible. When she isn’t writing, she’s editing or formatting other authors’ works, building websites, creating graphics, reading, playing video games, or watching Fortnite streams on Twitch. She likes to stay busy. So yes. Chaos.

Starting in 2003, Devon turned her writing bug away from poetry and online role play in chat rooms to write her first novel. Yes, it was trash, but the process of learning to edit that piece of garbage spurred her to learn more and more. By 2013, she read an author by the name of Raythe Reign, and somehow, Raythe’s stories finally made all that learning in Devon’s mind click. She wrote her first semi-salable book in two weeks. The next in ten days, and by the beginning of 2014, had seven books written.

Were they all trash? No, but she’s in the process of rewriting them, and has already written one, turning Duty and Sacrifice into three books of a nine-book series, The God Jars Saga. Those three books were followed by more, and the last two books in the series will be published in the first quarter of 2019.

Born on a Navy base in Patuxent River, Maryland, Devon has traveled the world, living in Sigonella, Sicily for three years, and visiting many European countries before moving back to the states around the age of seven. She’s lived in Florida for sixteen years, Oklahoma for a year, and Pennsylvania for the rest. She graduated from surgical technology school near the top of her class in 2004, and uses her medical and worldly knowledge to enrich her books whenever possible. Being the worldly woman she is, and having spent most of her teens as a broody goth, Devon has four tattoos, nine piercings, loves techno, electronica, dubstep, and similar music genres, and has an incurable internet addiction.

She builds her own computers, can’t stand Mac-anything unless it’s to format books in Vellum, and purple and black are her favorite colors, though that can change to burgundy and gray depending on the day. Since she has bipolar disorder, PTSD, social anxiety disorder, general anxiety disorder, clinical depression, and has trouble leaving her house due to all that, Devon works full time as an author and editor, and spends as much time as she can talking to other authors and her readers.
