Even if it smushed my hair, helmet head was worth every exhilarating second I spent riding on Devon's motorcycle. Also, I didn't hate having to wrap my arms around his waist or leaning against that broad back while we rode.

We didn't go far, but then he'd told me we wouldn't. Apparently he didn't like to get on the highway without being dressed for it. Or as Devon put it, even wolves can get road rash. Personally, I was waiting to see him in his leathers.

I'd watched every season of Sons of Anarchy and hadn't missed the fact that I was getting my own real-life Jax. Only without the drugs and arms dealing. Although… he did say something about running a pot farm.

It occurred to me I probably shouldn't find that idea as hot as I did, at least not while I was shoved up so close he could feel my erection. Not that I had any control over it, sitting on a powerful, vibrating sex machine on two wheels would get anyone hard.

Also? His scent was doing funny things to me. He smelled like a true California boy, all ocean breezes with a rich, nutty undertone, kind of like the walnut groves upstate where my gramps had grown up. 

Mostly, he smelled like… mine. Like I'd come home after a lifetime of being lost in the wilderness.

Shit, look at me getting all poetic. My friends would eat me alive over their brunch mimosas if they ever heard the sappy stuff running through my mind. I pushed those friends to the back of my mind. They were part of the human world. If I was starting this new adventure, becoming part of a pack, I should probably begin by embracing my wolf and putting my human life behind me.

At least… the human part that’d lived in the city. I was going to be a country wolf now, dammit. Hmm. That called for a new wardrobe, I'd have to ask Devon about proper farming attire. My thoughts were still swirling when Devon pulled into the parking lot of a chain hotel I recognized from TV commercials. God knew I'd never stayed in one, or expected to. Hopefully there weren’t bugs. 

New life, new adventure, remember? Don't get snobby, it isn't becoming. 

Besides, if my nearest and dearest in my wealthy world had sold me like a used car, why would I want to be like them? Nope, I was going to embrace my Gramps's philosophy of life—keep an open mind, park my privilege, and embrace change. He swore happiness could be found in the smallest things, now I guess it was time for me to find out if that was true.

After we’d pulled off our helmets, Devon hooked a thumb toward the glass doors. "Holiday Inn okay with you? It was close, and it's clean. Better than a lot of places I've stayed or would pick for myself, but I want you to be comfortable."

Choosing adventure with my mate was clearly the correct choice. Would he always be so sweet? When an unexpected emotion threatened to clog my throat, I giggled instead, batting my eyelashes as I went for the flirty response.  

"As long as you're here, I'm down for anything. Past me might've cracked a joke, but the guy who just got rescued from being auctioned is too happy and too free to gripe about something that silly. Or like the old saying goes—don't sweat the petty, pet the sweaty stuff."

Devon snorted, taking my hand as we walked. "I like you, Sky. You're a funny guy. Seriously though, I have a feeling you've never darkened the doors of a normal motel, tell me I'm wrong. Even in those cheap sweats, you stink of class and old money."

"Okay, you got me. This isn't my idea of a proper inn. For that, I'd have to take you to this adorable little chalet high in the Alps. The Swiss couple who own it run a tight but luxurious. But this isn't the Mountain Inn, and it doesn't need to be. Just give me a shower, a bed, and your arms—preferably in that order."

Casersis gave me a beautiful grin that made me want to take him inside and do naughty, dirty things to him. He must have seen my thoughts cross my face or felt it over our soulbond because his cheeks flushed scarlet, and he gave me the filthiest grin.

“I thought so.”

Laughing, he pulled me to him, and I claimed his mouth like I owned it. But, then again, I might as well own it because I owned him as much as he owned me. And I was under no illusions that he owned me, body and soul. But I loved every minute of it.

As I kissed him, tongue and teeth and breathing each other’s foggy breaths, I kneaded his ass to make him squirm against me as I shoved a knee between his legs for him to grind on. God, I couldn’t get enough of him. His taste sent me into a hormonal tailspin. His scent made me want to devour him. And the feel of him rutting against me was so decadent that I just wanted to stand there for hours making out with my soulmate.

About the Author:

If there’s one thing Devon likes most, it’s chaos. She has a chaotic mind, messy house, and throws her characters into every calamitous situation possible. When she isn’t writing, she’s editing or formatting other authors’ works, building websites, creating graphics, reading, playing video games, or watching Fortnite streams on Twitch. She likes to stay busy. So yes. Chaos.

Starting in 2003, Devon turned her writing bug away from poetry and online role play in chat rooms to write her first novel. Yes, it was trash, but the process of learning to edit that piece of garbage spurred her to learn more and more. By 2013, she read an author by the name of Raythe Reign, and somehow, Raythe’s stories finally made all that learning in Devon’s mind click. She wrote her first semi-salable book in two weeks. The next in ten days, and by the beginning of 2014, had seven books written.

Were they all trash? No, but she’s in the process of rewriting them, and has already written one, turning Duty and Sacrifice into three books of a nine-book series, The God Jars Saga. Those three books were followed by more, and the last two books in the series will be published in the first quarter of 2019.

Born on a Navy base in Patuxent River, Maryland, Devon has traveled the world, living in Sigonella, Sicily for three years, and visiting many European countries before moving back to the states around the age of seven. She’s lived in Florida for sixteen years, Oklahoma for a year, and Pennsylvania for the rest. She graduated from surgical technology school near the top of her class in 2004, and uses her medical and worldly knowledge to enrich her books whenever possible. Being the worldly woman she is, and having spent most of her teens as a broody goth, Devon has four tattoos, nine piercings, loves techno, electronica, dubstep, and similar music genres, and has an incurable internet addiction.

She builds her own computers, can’t stand Mac-anything unless it’s to format books in Vellum, and purple and black are her favorite colors, though that can change to burgundy and gray depending on the day. Since she has bipolar disorder, PTSD, social anxiety disorder, general anxiety disorder, clinical depression, and has trouble leaving her house due to all that, Devon works full time as an author and editor, and spends as much time as she can talking to other authors and her readers.

Here's a Steamy Teaser Excerpt from Khonsu:

Khonsu is a dark gay paranormal suspense with high heat, dubious consent, inappropriate use of mummy bandages, and a god that is maybe not as malicious as he seems.

This extract comes from the middle of the story. Rem Hayes, mediocre archaeologist, last heir to a family that spent most of the 19^th and 20^th century wandering around the ancient world helping themselves to bits of it, finds himself alone in the crumbling family mansion.  He has recently found a statue that belongs in a museum.  He’s rather enamoured of it.

I realise I’m drunk when I get up to close the library window against the moths and stumble against the panelling, giggling. The window is swollen in place and I can’t close it.

I struggle with it fruitlessly, inept and clumsy.

“Fuck it.”

Instead, I turn the lights off to deter the moths. I would try and close the curtains, but they would probably fall on me. Or, there would be even more moths hidden in their dusty folds.

“A veritable plague, like locusts or stuff.”

I make it back to the library table and fall into my chair. It creaks under me.

“Drunkenness is good,” I tell the statue. “Drunkenness brings you closer to your gods. If this was Egypt, your home, my being this pissed would be considered a holy thing. But you know that, obviously.”

The face of the statue stares back at me, sultry of eyes and sensuous of mouth.

I lick my lips, imagining how it would feel to trace such a tempting mouth with my tongue.

People talk about the eyes of the statues, how exotic they are, how alien and enticing with their wings of kohl and jewelled stare.

Me, I’m a sucker for the mouths.

I laugh at the pun.

The line of the lips calls to me. Always sealed shut, I want to see them open. I want to push my tongue between them. So plump and pouting. I want them warm and alive beneath my own.

I run a thumb over my own lower lip. My eyes feel heavy. Arousal coils low in my belly.

This is the kind of man I would want, if I got the choice. Someone imperious and blank who would look at me and lose control.

I want to drive stone to passion.

My tongue dabs the pad of my thumb, imagining I touch rigid lips, tempting them to break, to bite, to take.

I don’t think I have ever driven anyone to do unspeakable things, but I want to.

I’m hard, and I press my hand to my erection, widening my legs.

In real life, I’m all about consent and mutual pleasure.  In my fantasies, I want to be taken. I want to fight back and be taken some more.

“I want to talk to you.” Dad walks down the hallway to his office, knowing I’ll follow him. I lean against the doorframe, staying just far enough out that Zach will know where I am if he comes back into the kitchen.

Dad sits on the edge of his desk, facing me. “Who were the kids that were being mean?”

“Derek Sanders, the one I asked to leave here when he called Zach a stalker. Along with a few of JV freshman players that I don’t know well.”

“Not surprising, he seemed like a dick.”

My dad doesn’t usually call someone a dick, and it catches me so off guard that an abrupt laugh escapes from my chest.

“What were they making fun of him about?”

“His size…being a fourth-grader…a hobbit. Then they called him queer, and he got up and left.”

“No wonder he was so upset.” Dad rubs the back of his neck, and I realize that I have that same habit when I’m stressed.

“He was upset because he thought it would embarrass me. He never wants to hurt anyone, and when he thinks he’s the cause of it, he can’t handle it.”

“That’s why it makes me livid that someone would hurt him, even with words. God knows the kid has been through enough already.”

I catch movement out of the corner of my eye and turn to see Zach in the kitchen, looking lost. I wave my arm so he sees me, and he smiles. I watch him walk over to help Mom with the ice cream before looking back at Dad.

“He trusts you, Brady. The kind of trust that most people will never give. Be sure to treasure that and not do anything to break it. I’m not sure you could get it back if you did.”

Dad’s words feel heavy, like I need to memorize them and keep them close. “I wouldn’t do anything to break his trust.”

“I know you never would intentionally, but you’re young, and teenagers do stupid things. I think you’re mature beyond your years, and I am so proud of the young man you’re becoming. I’m only cautioning you because I see the bond you have with Zach, and I’m not sure you truly understand what it would mean to lose that. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of friendship…love…and so many go through life searching for what you’ve found so young. Many never find it.”

He walks over to put his hand on my shoulder, squeezing gently. “All I’m saying, Son, is that when it comes to Zach, think before you react and don’t take all the love and trust he gives you for granted. Someday you’ll truly understand the depth and beauty of what he gives you. And what you give him.” His hand moves down over my heart. “You’ve given him a lot of space in here. Take care of your heart, Son, because that boy in the kitchen is most of it.”

I nod, speechless at my dad’s words.

“I kick my clothes from my ankles and lift Timmy to the bed. “Just lie back and let me take care of you.”

When his body goes limp, I’m afraid I’ve hurt his pride.

I’m gentle when I kiss him, and his lips move carefully against mine. Soon I shift my attention to the vulnerable underside of his jaw and then the sleek column of his neck. Excerpt:

“Do you cook?” The question jolts me out of my reverie, and while my mind catches up to the conversation I watch as he adds a pinch of this and a dash of that to the pan, never measuring anything.  He must make this frequently, because that’s pretty impressive, at least to me.  I snort indelicately, and that makes Jamie turn, finally giving me his full attention. My brain stutters to a halt, utterly wrecked, as I am hit with the power of a Jamie MacDougall grin. “I’ll take that as a no.  Do you want to try?”  I blame him for what happens next.  

Without thinking I find myself right next to him, eagerly nodding.  “I’m afraid I haven’t the first clue how to make anything that doesn’t involve the microwave, the contents of a can, or a telephone. You’ve been warned.” He laughs and I stare, dumbfounded.  We’ve been together almost every day for months and I have never heard a full-blown laugh from him. Sure, he’s made a few amused sounds, and once even chuckled.  I thought that was a miracle!  Now I’m desperately trying to think of ways to make him laugh again, because it’s the best sound in the entire world.

“All right, why don’t I show you how to chop the garlic. That’s fairly straightforward.” I hesitantly set my tea on the counter.  What am I doing?  Jamie hands me the knife, hilt first, like I know what to do with it, and motions for me to step in front of the cutting board.  “It’s not going to bite you, Ashley.”

I swallow hard and look him in the eyes.  “You don’t know that. You’ve never seen me in the kitchen.” I take the knife from him and hold it in a vice-like grip while I stare at the clove of garlic, glaring it into submission.
