Excerpt:

Shoving the shower curtain aside roughly, I let loose a rather unmanly scream as my eyes land on a strange person standing in front of the closed door of the bathroom. I grab the shower curtain as my feet slip out from under me on the wet ceramic bathtub. I roll into the shower curtain, clutching on tightly as I lose my balance and go down, sending the plastic clips pinging off in all directions like tiny missiles knocking bottles off shelves and cracking the corner of the bathroom mirror. Pain clangs through my elbow and vibrates up my arm as, cocooned in clear plastic, I slide into the bath, breathing heavily and looking like I’ve been gift wrapped by a serial killer.

“Owwww,” I croak slowly to no one in particular.

Reaching one arm over the edge of the bath, my body follows and I flop ungraciously onto the rug like a newborn baby seal. Squinting without my glasses on I can just about make out the still figure standing in front of the bathroom door clutching a handbag.

Mrs Abernathy, I realise with a groan of resignation. What is it with ghosts? First Dusty and now the old lady. What part of the bathroom is off limits do they not understand? Is nothing sacred anymore?

I’m about to open my mouth when the bathroom door swings open and Danny strides in, passing straight through Mrs Abernathy and making her disappear into a thin vaporous mist.

“I heard a crash.” Danny’s  eyes land on me sprawled out on the floor. “You okay?” His brow quirks as he takes in the assortment of displaced bottles and small plastic shower curtain clips everywhere.

“Slight shower malfunction.” I release a winded breath. “A little help, please.”

He strides toward me and effortlessly scoops me off the floor. His hands are gentle, his eyes filled with concern.

“Did you hurt yourself?” He frowns. “Maybe we should get you looked at, you might have a concussion.”

“I’m fine,” I manage.

“We could call 111.” He turns me slowly, peeling me out of the shower curtain like he’s un-bandaging The Mummy in a Lon Chaney movie.

“I wouldn’t even call 111 for advice on how to remove a splinter.” I wrinkle my nose. “Honestly, I’m fine.”

He wraps the towel around me, pinning my arms to my sides as he drops a kiss on my nose. “Be more careful, I have plans for this gorgeous body later.” He smiles, kissing my lips softly.

I watched as the mysterious man gave his details at the door and then they made their way into the room. The woman at his side immediately began to mingle with people around her as he stood still and rigid, his gaze beginning to circle around the room until it caught mine. Shit! Those green eyes were like poison—intoxicating and calling to me like a toxin that had entered my bloodstream—deadly and vicious. I glanced down to his plump lips and his tongue swiped out and caressed them. Fuck!

I quickly downed the drink in my hand, appreciating the smooth liquid before the burn hit the back of my throat. I placed the glass down—not too gently—onto the bar behind me and it was lucky the glass didn’t shatter within my grasp. Prologue

After I died, but before I rose as a god, the last thing I recall of my life was Hadrian’s kiss. His embrace. His loving touch upon my cold, drowned, dead face. I no longer felt pain or anguish. Or fear. When he wrapped me in his arms, two things were apparent. There was no escaping his love. And I never wanted to escape. Here he was, Caesar…king…ruler of the Roman Empire by divine right, and I was nothing but a man born to run wild with bow and spear. Before his kiss, I would have spent my life hunting and fishing. I relished the outdoors and shunned polite society. My mother would have seen me wed. My father would have preferred me become a praetor. When I was twelve, I discovered some things that would ultimately change my life forever.

Growing up on a farm in rural eastern Alabama, I learned about life and how things worked. Even though I loved looking after our three horses, sheep, and the goats we raised on our dairy farm, it was a hard life, and I wanted out. I wanted more from life than being a dairy farmer in nowhere Alabama.

The only problem was my parents had a completely different plan for my life. And it was their way or the highway, as the expression goes. They wanted me to stay in my very strict, sheltered world, get married to a nice girl, and raise a family on the farm.

All that made me want to do was run as far and fast as I could.

I wanted to see the world and be free to make my own choices for my life. I figured out the only way to make that happen was to go to college and become someone that wasn’t the son of Joseph and Helen Kincaid, the dairy farmers from Eastover, Alabama.

There was no way they’d agree to pay for it, so I had to find a way. I also knew that once I left, there was no going back. It should have terrified me. Everything I knew was there. But there was no fear because I wasn’t going alone. My best friend was leaving with me. Just like me, she wanted more from her life too. And she knew there was no finding it in Eastover.

Meeting my best friend, Allison Marie Finley was the best thing to ever happen to me.

We were two peas in a pod. We’d known each other through elementary school but didn’t become best friends until the sixth grade when we were paired up in class to do a research project. She was the person I could tell anything to and knew it wouldn’t get out. Allison was the only person I’d ever told I might like boys a little more than girls. And she knew I’d never be able to find out who I was if I stayed home.

So when we started high school, we devised a plan to get out. I found football to pay my way through college, and she went the academic route to get scholarships to pay for hers. The second we graduated, we left home without the blessing of either of our parents to attend the University of Georgia and never looked back.
