TIM MILLER

My life in Valentine, Nebraska, wasn’t easy. At just nineteen, I found myself homeless and jobless with no prospects on the horizon. A life of abuse crushed people, but I still had space in my heart for love. With the support and guidance of an elderly widower, my life finally began to turn around.

Being young and gay in a small town brought challenges but I had goals for my life, one of which was to be loved. The arrival of a world famous author to our small community turned my world upside down. What did I have to offer a man like Davis? I have nothing but my heart. I hope it’s enough.

DAVIS HILL

After the end of my five-year relationship in Malibu, I was desperate for change. Even though my career was successful, I could still use an infusion of ideas for my next book. So I did the unthinkable and decided to randomly stick a pin in a map and relocate. My friends may have labeled me insane, but I couldn’t resist the temptation. A fresh start in a new town offered the chance to distract myself while I heal from the pain of a failed relationship.

Coming to the rescue of Tim on the very first day we met, was the beginning of one story I hadn’t expected. I had relocated to find a great story, but hadn’t expected to discover my own love story. Could a small town in the middle of nowhere offer a new beginning for both my heart and my career? Little did I know that small towns could have dark secrets that could threaten to shatter my heart.

PROLOGUE: Tim

“Sorry to wake you, Mr. Hanks,” I said, standing on the front porch of his old farmhouse. I turned toward where I lived several hundred yards away on the other side of the graveled country road. He glanced that way as well, knowing where I’d come from and why.

His pinched face said it all. “What’d you do this time, boy?”

I glanced toward my house again, shivering from the bone chilling temps. “Left the bathroom light on, sir.”

It was nearly zero degrees outside and I’d been thrown out by my stepdad. I was only wearingpajama bottoms, threadbare socks, and a holey Garth Brooks T-shirt I’d purchased for a dime at the local secondhand store. I’d also managed to grab a pair of rubber boots I kept in the mudroom but hadn’t had time to snatch my coat before I felt my stepdad’s foot on my backside when he literally kicked me out the door.

“Come inside, son. You’re gonna catch your death out there.”

“Thank you, sir,” I mumbled, my breath visible in the cold. “I’m really sorry, but I didn’t have anywhere else to go, Mr. Hanks.”

“And your momma?”

“He’s leaving her alone tonight, sir.”

“OK, then. I guess there’s no need for my shotgun,” he said, stepping aside for me to enter his kitchen.“I swear,” he muttered, shuffling behind me as I made my way to the kitchen table, rubbing my arms to create warmth. “You hungry, boy?” Five seconds went by without me answering him. “I’ll take that as a yes.”

I sat down at a table I’d become fairly acquainted with since I’d turned eighteen a year and a month ago. I watched as Mr. Hanks used his hand and scooped bacon grease out of an old coffee can his wife had set by the stove some forty years ago.

“Eggs and fried biscuits okay, son?”

“Yes, sir. Thank you, sir,” I responded, happy for whatever he had to offer.

“You eat today, boy?” he asked, turning to me after breaking four eggs into the old cast iron frying pan. The sizzling heat caused grease splatter to shoot from the pan. The smell of bacon wafted through the kitchen’s air even though there wasn’t any in the pan, but the taste would be amazing, nonetheless. “And I’ll take that answer as a no.”

“I was busy, sir,” I lied. “I guess I forgot.”

“I guess you did,” he agreed, but I could tell he knew otherwise. This wasn’t our first late night meal. Mr. Hanks knew my backstory well. He sliced two biscuits in half and placed them face down in the pan after sliding the eggs out of the way.

“What were you so busy doin’ in this weather you’d forget to eat somethin’, son?” he asked. “Not much goin’ on at your farm is there?”

He leaned over my right shoulder and placed a plate of food in front of me. I felt his finger brush across the back of my neck and he tugged on the collar of my frayed T-shirt from behind me. “Harold had me sortin’ the barn out, sir,” I answered, squirming in my chair because I knew what Mr. Hanks was looking for. Harold was my stepdad.

“And where exactly did you get these marks?” he asked, stretching the thin fabric down from the back of my neck. I was silent after his question and he was having nothing of it. I was afraid to start eating, wondering what he was thinking of his discovery. “Do me a favor, Timmy, and stand up for me,” he urged, tapping my shoulder.

I reached for the back of my T-shirt’s collar but he intercepted me and held my hand gently. “It’s nothin’, sir,” I lied again. I hated that I kept lying to the only person who seemed to care about me.

“Let me decide that, son,” he stated. “Now please stand up and take your shirt off for me.”

I stared at the plate of eggs and biscuits, my stomach exhorting me to dig in. I was hungry like most days lately and hoped he’d still let me eat when he found out I’d lied to him. I shuffled to my feet and stood staring at the food, tears fell from myeyes which I tried hard to stifle. I knew very well what crying led to at home but the pain that resided inside me overpowered my ability to stop the tears. I needed something more than crying as a defense and I’d yet to find what that was.

“I fell off the ladder headin’ up to the hay loft,” I explained nervously as I began to lift the shirt up. “I’m clumsy like that sometimes,” I mumbled.

He pulled my shirt the rest of the way over my head, shaking his head slowly from side to side, frowning. “You’re just gonna keep lyin’ for him, ain’t ya?” Mr. Hanks asked.

“I’m sorry, sir,” I said. “He’s been better lately.”

“Better’n what?” he asked. “He’s whippin’ you again, boy, and that ain’t better.”

“He’ll sober up tomorrow and then he’ll be better,” I defended, almost believing the lie.

“Oh, trust me, boy. He’ll be better all right, but it won’t be tomorrow. That’s a fact. Now you sit here and eat your food,” he said. “I’ll be gettin’ my shotgun so I can pay your stepdaddy a visit, and I ain’t waitin’ for him to sober up.”

Adverse Conditions

Adverse Conditions Cover

Reclaimed Hearts, Book 1

Xavier swore he’d never move back to the flyspeck of a town he’d grown up in and he kept that promise for over twenty years. Now he's back for good.

Vincent never left. After earning his teaching certificate, he stayed in town to be close to his elderly parents. These days he’s the single dad of a fifteen-year-old daughter and working two jobs to make ends meet. He's perfectly happy with his life.

Xavier's mission is to save Cooper Springs. But his efforts are being hindered by his stodgy, straight-laced, rule-following neighbor, Vincent Barone. Dark-eyed, broad-shouldered, and muscly Vincent, who Xav stealthily ogles when he toils in his yard sans shirt. For a high school shop teacher, Vincent is too sexy. And he has a kid. And he infuriates Xavier. And anyway, love is for suckers.

Vincent doesn't have time to date. And he certainly wouldn’t date his flashy, arrogant, neighbor who he absolutely did not have a crush on in high school. Who did Xavier think he was, moving back to town and throwing his weight around, causing butterflies in Vincent's stomach, and making his stupid heart beat faster every time he saw him?

Cooper Springs has changed since they were kids, and maybe two guys can move from hate to love. But are they ready? Will Vincent bend a few of his rules? Will Xavier reign in his chaotic tendencies? Is love in the air?

Then there’s the matter of the grisly discovery in the woods, murder is bad for business.

Welcome to Cooper Springs, home to UFO chasers, Sasquatch believers, conspiracy theorists, chainsaw artists, and regular folk just trying to make a living. And, quite possibly, a killer.

Adverse Conditions is the first in the Reclaimed Hearts series, set in the wilds of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, it is an opposites-attract, older lovers. enemies to lovers, small-town romance, with a little murder.

Excerpt:

Xavier glanced out the window again. Across the street, Liam Wright’s most recent chainsaw sculpture was proudly displayed in his front yard. He couldn’t quite tell what it was supposed to be, he’d have to ask Liam when he saw him.

“Yeah—” Movement in the yard next to Liam’s caught Xav’s attention. He leaned closer to the windowpane for a better view of his hunky, muscly neighbor as he stomped out into the street. The man carried a long-handled yard tool slung over his shoulder like some character out of a Monty Python movie and was dragging a clean green bin behind him.

Halting at the corner, he hefted the cast iron grating off in one swift movement and began aggressively raking the leaves and other debris out of and away from the drain. Even though he was bundled up in a yellow rain slicker, Xavier would have recognized the Samaritan anywhere. “And also, you don’t have to deal with Vincent Barone.”

Vincent Barone. His nemesis.

All Xavier wanted to do was sell property and help Cooper Springs grow. But Vincent Barone had decided to get himself certified as a real estate appraiser and stymie Xavier at every fucking turn. Every damn i and every damn t that possibly needed dotting or crossing—and many that didn’t—were mentioned in every single one of Barone’s reports. Didn’t Barone understand that there needed to be room for negotiation? Maybe Mrs. Nelson’s estate didn’t want to fix the roof and would instead reduce the sale price for a potential buyer.

“It’s his literal job, Xavier,” Daisy reminded him with a laugh. Probably hoping to stop the rant she’d spotted from over a hundred miles away. “He is supposed to find things the seller should fix. No one wants the surprise of the AC failing the day after move-in.”

“He won’t listen to reason, Daisy,” Xavier grumbled. “He is literally the most aggravating person in all of Cooper Springs. There’s a guy coming all the way from Seattle today to look at the cabins and I know Vinny-boy is going to screw it up—if it gets as far as an offer.”

Barone was extremely thorough. Which was great when building bridges or, in Vincent’s case, teaching shop at the high school and needing to make sure the bored teenagers didn’t cut their extremities off. But Vincent’s part-time second job was home appraisal, and Xavier was tired of being surprised by what Barone wrote up in his official reports. At least give a guy a heads-up that the sump pump had backed up into the garage and caused water damage. Even if Barone had noted that the damage “appeared to be years old,” banks hated comments like that. Banks wanted to hear about new roofs and perfect sewer lines, not repairs that could reduce the value of their investment. And Xavier liked to be prepared with the bad news before he talked to his clients, not in the middle of meeting with them.

How fucking hard was that?

“Have you actually tried talking to him? Or do you just stand at your window and shoot dagger glares through the plate glass?”

Xavier moved away from the window so he wouldn’t be lying when he said, “No.”

A Thousand Vermilion Stars Audiobook Cover

FBI Files, Book 3

A copycat serial killer is driving their whole team crazy.

Dr. Leo Reeves has always considered himself a halfway decent criminal profiler. Some of his colleagues even call him brilliant. With this assignment, he sure as hell doesn’t feel that way. He’s been missing something at every turn. The case is dragging into its seventh month and every lead he and his team follow, takes them to a dead end…literally. Leo sure hasn’t come up with anything to move things along, as hard as he’s tried. They’re no closer to capturing their killer…even after following him all the way to Miami.

Special Agent Max Prince is worried.

The longer this case goes on, the farther down the rabbit hole, his partner and lover, Leo, seems to fall. To make matters worse, back home in Los Angeles, detectives Cassidy Ryan and Mike Williams have turned up a second graveyard filled with some surprising victims…victims the team know well. Worse yet, Miami has left them with even more questions. When a good cop is murdered, the whole case turns on its head. Everyone wants answers and their team doesn’t have any.

Something has to change.

Worst of all, the copycat hasn’t stopped killing, leaving strange clues behind, even inserting himself into the case. When one of their own is put in horrible danger, and DNA results reveal a shocking truth, things get even more complicated. No one likes taking risks, especially when they involve meeting the killer on his terms. But taking that risk, might be the only way to resolve this case. Whether it’s the desert graveyards of SoCal, the sexy hot nights of South Beach’s gay scene, or the sticky bayous of New Orleans, Max and Leo have vowed to end this monster once and for all…if he doesn’t end them first.

Excerpt:

“Leo…Leo.” He blinked awake, then slowly rolled his head on the headrest to find Max staring into his eyes. As always, his lover was the most beautiful man, even when the expression on his handsome face was serious and his pale green eyes were clouded with worry. He’d been looking at him that way for several weeks.

“Where are we?” Leo sat forward, reaching up to wipe drool from his cheek. He’d fallen asleep against the plane’s window as it flew through the night.

“Somewhere over Central Texas. We still have two and a half hours before we land in Miami. Good nap?”

Leo dragged his gaze away from him and turned to the window. With the lights low in the cabin, he couldn’t even make out shapes in the night sky. He looked back at Max and sighed, bending forward so he could take his water out of the seat back. “I guess.” He took a long sip and recapped the bottle. “I don’t get much uninterrupted sleep these days.”

Max reached for his hand and threaded their fingers together before resting it on his thigh. “Do you think I’m not aware of that, darlin’?”

Leo frowned. “I’m sorry, Max. Of course, you are.” The last three months had been one long nightmare, trying to learn all they could about their elusive copycat during the day, and trying to forget all about what he did, at night. Lincoln was finally back at work, heading up his extraordinary FBI team as they worked to shut down the cell Gunter Becker’s Road Knights had controlled. The outlaw biker was currently cooling his heels in a Federal prison after the FBI had refused to sign off on his WITSEC deal when they found Kathy Campbell dead.

Meanwhile, the team had managed to put several of their targets permanently out of business. Between Grant Jacobs, a self-professed copycat of Dean Arnold Corll, and Andrew Wiley, a copycat who took great pride in modeling himself after Dr. Harold Shipman, two less killers had been deprived of their lives. Leo couldn’t say he’d been upset to see either man meet his end. Seeing them behind bars would have been preferrable to writing reports about how neither had survived when they’d been confronted by the team and opted for suicide by cop but that hadn’t been their choice.

“Leo?”

He met Max’s questioning gaze with one of his own. “Yeah, baby?”

“Grant Jacobs and Andrew Wiley…”

“What about them?” Leo cocked his head to the side.

“It’s like…ya know, it’s like they just tried to get themselves killed. They wanted it, right? That’s some kinda pathology, right? ‘Cause, I don’t think serial killers are usually prone to suicide. Am I wrong?”

Leo shook his head. “No. Not usually, Max, but the vast range of pathologies that go with that kind of mind are so huge, they truly can’t be painted with a single brush. A lot of the time they’re extreme narcissists, while they loathe themselves so badly, they long for death at any cost. Most of them fall somewhere in the middle on that spectrum.”

“And the serial killer working with Greg Campbell? The Sweetwater Slaughterer’s copycat? He’s not suicidal, right?”

“We don’t know that yet, Max.” Leo smiled sadly at him. “We only know one thing about him.”

“What’s that, darlin’?”

“He’s not finished.”

Excerpt:

With every breath, Meran tasted the metallic tang of blood and sweat. It tainted the air and set the small arena abuzz with anticipation. He surged to his feet with the rest of the audience, all eyes affixed on the downwards arc of the fighter’s blood-stained sword.

“He’s going to kill him!”

The phrase echoed through the throng like threads of fate.

Meran’s fascination pulled up short at the expressions on his companions’ faces. Ellom’s grey eyes haunted, Jon’s lips pressed together tightly. At the arena’s centre, the felled combatant staggered to his knees, the colour rapidly draining from his features. His shield dropped from his grasp as he clutched at the spurting stump of his mutilated sword arm.

With a thud, the mail-clad champion released his own shield and knocked the helm from his opponent’s head. Winding fingers through the defeated man’s sweat-slick hair, the victor jerked his hand back, his sword grazing the man’s exposed throat.

Meran’s dismay echoed Ellom’s gasp and Jon’s stunned expletive.

“Don’t do it,” Meran shouted, his words consumed by the noise of thumping feet, pounding hands, and voices that roared their desire to see the vanquished man slaughtered. The light of the berserker burned bright in the victor’s eyes, as if poised on the precipice of giving in to his nature.

The black-cloaked enforcers drew their weapons and stepped from the shadows.

“The Mavish. The Mavish. The Mavish.” The crowd roared the warrior’s name over and over as if demanding he finish what he had begun.

Meran swallowed, his mouth dry.

“Stand down.” One of the surrounding enforcers advanced on the Mavish.

The warrior ignored them and, with a wicked grin, caressed the edge of his blade against the vulnerable flesh beneath his opponent’s jaw. His intense gaze challenged the crowd, incited them, playing them until they bayed for the blood that only he could give them.

Meran pushed forwards, his heart hammering. “Mercy!” he yelled.

The enforcers’ bows pulled tautly. The crowd’s excitement ratcheted higher.

“Mercy!” His shouts were as effective as a whisper in the face of a gale…until a warning arrow whistled, and blood bloomed across the Mavish’s cheek.

“Mercy!”

Meran’s shout reverberated across the arena as all else turned to silence.

About the Author:

Born in New Zealand, Deonne grew up on a diet of genie’s and witches and space adventure. Not vampires, not then anyway, they were too scary. Back in that day they definitely didn’t sparkle.

She spent hours scribbling her version of fanfic in exercise books, on lined refill and coloured notepaper. But then she discovered epic fantasy; Eddings, Kerr, Donaldson & Brooks and felt she had come home.

Later, as happens with most people, she let herself be diverted by the mundanity of adulthood; marriage, widowhood, remarriage, children, separation and even earthquakes, until she remembered the thing she was missing. Thus began her journey into the world of Locurnia.

With family in the queer community and her developing passion for all things MM she decided to marry these two loves together.

Excerpt:

Lord knew Paul was pretty sick of himself too. Sick of being alone. It sure would be nice to attend gallery parties with someone on his arm—someone who loved him.

Damn, he wanted that more than he cared to admit.

Would this mystery man named Josef be the answer?

Well, if he wanted to find out, he’d better get his bony ass up to the Cabaña Lounge.

Stepping off the elevator to the rooftop lounge, he smiled at the small sign stating black tie optional. But like Oscar Wilde said, “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” Dressing down was never an option either, in Paul’s opinion. Sort of like when a guy invites you to his birthday party and the invite says “no gifts.”

Yeah, he knew better than that, too.

Though he wore his favorite tux, he had foregone the tuxedo shirt and bow tie, opting for a simple white silk shirt that accentuated his spray tan and whitened teeth.

Overdressed casual, he liked to call it.

The lounge patrons ranged from gray-haired seniors and over-forty, soft-in-the-middle types to pie-eyed honeymooners. A pair of old ladies in the corner might be lesbians, but Paul based that assumption solely on their footwear.

Really? Clarks with a cocktail dress?

Unbe-lee-vable!

Waiters walked around the open-air lounge with champagne, and he snagged one before making his way over to the bar—the designated location to meet his date. Soft tunes of a steel drum band playing in the corner filled the warm night with a delightful tinny sound. The sky had begun its transition from blue to pink as sunset approached—making the lighting perfect for his complexion. The scenic view of the sea would be mind-blowing in a few moments.

How fantastically romantic, watching the sunset together.

Excitement and nervous energy itched at his toes. Scanning the bar area, his eyes fell on a lone figure, his back to Paul, attention fixed on the vast ocean view.

Oh no, it can’t be....

Holding his breath as his stomach leapt into his throat, Paul approached. After another sweep of the lounge, this guy was the only single man in the entire place.

It had to be him, right?

Thick and muscular, he stood shorter than Paul’s own six-three, but more solid. He painted the picture of a fantasy, a perfect silhouette gazing out at the sea. If Paul let his mind wander, he could almost imagine the man morphing into swaths of paint, thick and sultry on the canvas. His hands were tucked into tailored white linen pants, stretching the fabric across the roundest and most delectable backside he’d ever laid eyes on. His rich mocha skin highlighted the seams of the woven fabric.

Fuck, did the man even have on underwear?

Please God, don’t let his pretty wife join him and shatter the illusion.

“Josef?” He tried to keep the hopefulness from his voice.

The man turned and Paul sucked in his breath.

Light hazel eyes met his and a sideways smile cut through a gorgeous face. “Oui, I am Josef.”

Oh, double fuck, he has an accent. Paul nearly swooned right there, but he managed to extend a hand. “I’m Paul.”

The man’s questioning smile widened into one of genuine delight, and a warm smooth hand wrapped around his. “Ah, bonjour, Paul.”

Before he saw it coming, Josef swept in, drawing him into a brief embrace before kissing each of his cheeks. He shivered from the warmth of a beautiful male body pressed against him. While everyone knew cheek kissing was the norm in many cultures, the brush of the man’s lips made him stifle a giggle.

Josef stepped back, not letting go of his hand.

A warm, tropical breeze teased the faint wetness those kisses had left on his cheeks, a whisper of an imagined memory—one he never wanted to forget. Josef had thin, well-cared-for dreadlocks that landed just below his collar. Paul wanted to reach out and touch them, make sure he was real. Or, better yet, hold them tight like reins while he plowed the man from behind….

Jesus!

His skin flushed and his groin stirred, more than pleased at Destiny Ink’s choice for him this evening.

“I am Josef Debrossé.” He had yet to release Paul’s hand—not that he had any complaints—and his blood warmed from touching a total stranger he’d paid to meet.

He let out a breathless chuckle, not surprised he’d been holding his breath. “Paul Strait,” he replied, caught up in something... giddiness? Excitement? Sexual tension? He wasn’t sure, but he felt like a teenager swooning on a first date. Almost as an afterthought, he added his signature tagline, “And I’m anything but.”

About the Author:
Deanna Wadsworth might be a bestselling erotica author, but she leads a pretty vanilla life in Ohio with her wonderful husband and a couple adorable cocker spaniels. She has been spinning tales and penning stories since childhood, and her first erotic novella was published in 2010. She has served multiple board positions for different RWA chapters, including President of the Rainbow Romance Writers in 2017. When she isn’t writing books or brainstorming with friends, you can find her making people gorgeous in a beauty salon. An avid reader, she also loves gardening, cooking, music, and dancing. Often she can be seen hanging out on the sandbar in the muddy Maumee River or chilling with her hubby and a cocktail in their basement bar. In between all that fun, Deanna cherishes the quiet times when she can let her wildly active imagination have the full run of her mind. Her fascination with people and the interworkings of their relationships have always inspired her to write romance with spice and love without boundaries.

Confetti Hitched, Book 1

Joe Bagshaw doesn’t believe in love or marriage anymore, which is rather a hindrance for a wedding planner.

His own marriage was a whirlwind affair that ended before the ink could dry on the wedding certificate. Nevertheless, even with his divorce pending, he’s getting by. Or at least he was until he finds himself snowed in at a remote Scottish hotel with the wedding party from hell, a terrible ABBA tribute band, and his soon-to-be ex-husband.

Lachlan has missed Joe from the second his husband walked away. He wants Joe back and is prepared to do anything to get him. Being snowed in together seems to offer the chance Lachlan needs, but does he have what it takes to get Joe to trust in love and their marriage again?

From bestselling author Lily Morton, comes a romantic comedy about love, matrimony, and the best of second chances.

This is the first book in the Confetti Hitched series.

Confetti Hearts Teaser 1

Excerpt:

“I’m so sorry, Joe.”

“Don’t worry about it,” I croak. “This happens to me a lot.”

I’m crammed into a tiny bathroom cubicle, holding up one end of a massive meringue wedding dress. Lena the bridesmaid holds the other end while the bride sits on the loo.

Daisy stares at me from her porcelain perch. “This happens a lot?”

“Oh, almost every day,” I say airily. “I’d bet most gay men have never had this experience. I’ll be the envy of the gay choir.”

She snorts and Lena shifts in her cramped position in the bathroom stall. “Joe’s a wedding planner, so I’m presuming this is part of his job description, but I really do think the bridesmaid’s charter needs updating. I saw mention of hen nights, crappy dresses, and bridal blues, but absolutely zip about holding a wedding dress while the happy woman pees.”

Daisy chuckles. “This will be just like all those times I’ve held your hair back when you were drunk.”

“I’m just coming at it from the opposite end.”

They grin at each other, and I shift from foot to foot.

“It’s very warm in here,” I observe. “I hope I don’t faint, because that would make this whole thing very awkward.”

“It can get more awkward?” Lena says incredulously.

Daisy sighs. “I’m so sorry but I can’t go now.”

“Performance anxiety,” Lena says. “I do hope your bridegroom doesn’t suffer from the same thing.”

I twist to face the wall as best I can, trying to avoid leaving the skin of my nose on the door hinges. “I’ll try to give you some privacy,” I wheeze.

Excerpt:

“That was a sick goal at the end of the second period, man.”

Zane Murphy looked away from the NHL game on the TV screen to smile at his new road roommate. “Thanks. Your pass was a beauty.”

“I’ve gotcha tape to tape, my dude. Tape to tape.”

Zane gave him an amused glance. He still wasn’t sure what to make of Ryan Hartinger.

They were only a few weeks into the season and Ryan was a freshman player. He was a solid winger and a great locker-room guy. He had an infectious energy on and off the ice and so far, Zane was pretty pleased to have him as a liney.

He was a little less sure how he felt about rooming with him on the road though.

Ryan reminded him of a not-very-well-trained golden retriever.

And he talked. A lot.

“Keep it up and hopefully we’ll have a better season this year than last,” Zane said with a sigh as he glanced back at the Boston vs. Dallas game.

Last season, the University of Michigan’s ice hockey team had been knocked out of the Frozen Four in the first round to a school that shouldn’t have been able to beat them. It still stung.

If only he’d gotten that last goal in the net instead of the puck bouncing off the post like that …

“If we keep it up, maybe someday we’ll be playing there,” Ryan said, nodding at the TV.

“God, I hope so.” Zane didn’t even try to hide the longing in his voice.

“Hey, you’ve already been drafted by the Otters. You’ve got a great shot at it.”

Zane settled back against the headboard of the hotel room bed, trying to push down the warm glow that settled in his chest at the thought of his draft day last summer. The Otters were a newer NHL expansion team in the Chicago Illinois area and Zane was itching to play for them.

He’d been watching Anders Lindholm—their top line center—burn up the league for years with Boston and a shot at playing on a team with him was everything.

Some guys Zane knew had called him crazy for planning to finish his degree first but his parents were pretty strongly in favor of him earning one in case the NHL didn’t work out, and Zane understood that.

Besides, U of M’s team was so fucking good. Zane had gotten a ton of experience, dialed in his game, and felt much more seasoned as a player than he had a few years ago. And he was looking forward to another shot at the college hockey championship this year.

It meant he’d probably have to spend less time bouncing between the Otters and their AHL affiliate. He hoped so anyway.
