A Wildlands Firefighter Romance

Loving Tribulation Brewster was as hot and all-consuming as a July brushfire. It burned him out. Jack recognized that too much booze and too much blind love wasn't going to make a relationship--and he left. Fifteen years later Jack Reyna and Trib Brewster meet up on a fire line during the biggest forest fire in a decade. Only Jack's the boss. And Trib is a convict worker. Will nothing short of a fire whirl keep them from reuniting?

LLAFW Teaser 1

Excerpt:

“Truthfully, you crossed my mind a time or two.” Trib leaned against the shovel. “Always ends the same way.”

“How’s that?” Jack asked. He didn’t see it coming. The blow. Closed fist and precise.

Trib hauled off and punched him in the jaw.

Sharp, searing pain. The sound of head to dirt.

Cartoon stars and birdies circled his head.

His brain rattled around in his cranium, and he choked out blood.

Against his own internal admonitions to…stop. Halt. Not fight back…

Jack rallied to his feet and returned the blow.

Trib took it on the chin and stumbled backward onto the blackened ground. Jack’s gut twinged. He’d never hit someone he loved…someone he had once loved…before. “Now we’re even,” Jack said, extending his hand to help Trib up.

Trib took his hand. “Like hell.”

He pulled Jack forward, flipped him, and caught him in a leg wrestling maneuver. Jack fought against the constraint. Trib was heavier. More muscular. Not recovering from injury. And in control.

Jack felt himself go hard. Hard like he hadn’t been in years. Hard with need. Hard with want. “Let me go,” he said. He tried to wrench away from Trib. He smelled dirt and ash and sweat. And the strong aroma of rut. “Let me go—now.”

Trib squared his position and rammed his crotch against Jack’s butt. “You left me.”

Prosper Woods Chronicles, Book 4

Bloodthirsty vamps. Dire Wolf royalty. The Prince of unicorns. What's next? All out war of course.

When I came to Prosper Woods, the last thing I expected was to be walking into a world of magic. Horror movies at the theater hadn’t prepared me for the realization that vampires, werewolves, witches, shifters, and ghosts were real. After six months, I’ve learned to live with it and I count many odd creatures as friends, not to mention my soulmate, a vampire who makes me tremble when he kisses me.

I’m hopelessly, helplessly in love.

When I came to Prosper Woods, my expectations were low. I brought Robert’s bones, numerous possessions, and regret for my role in my maker’s sheer bloodlust. I also brought Robert’s ancient tomes. When Sergio showed up demanding I give him the books, I banished him with the help of a spell and a friendly witch. I never expected those books to be the source of danger to my man and our life together.

I’m hopelessly, helplessly in love.

When the vampire came to town, I knew things were going to change. What I didn’t expect was to become alpha of my pack and fall in love with my best friend. Werewolf royalty moved into town, bad vampires were about to go to war with us, and the biggest surprise of all…the unicorns had a king of their own. I don’t know what’s about to happen, but I want to avoid war. With Sam by my side, I’m pretty sure I can face anything.

Because I’m hopelessly, helplessly in love.

Excerpt:

When Mrs. Mendez had gone, I caught Sid’s eye. The old man walked over to the counter and lifted a hinged area, beckoning me to come behind it with him.

“He’s in the root cellar. Go out the backdoor. As soon as you step outside, you’ll see the double doors leading down to it,” Sid said. He glanced out through the storefront window before looking back at me. “It’s just now sundown, so it should be safe.” He didn’t elaborate but I knew he meant Vincent could come out, now there was no danger from the sun.

“Thanks, Sid,” I said, patting the old man on the forearm as I passed by him and headed to the back of his store. I took a deep breath as I stood at the entrance to the root cellar out in the back alley. I don’t know why I was nervous. I suppose I was afraid of being rejected. Just as I was reaching out to grab the door handle, the double doors suddenly opened, and I was looking into the bright topaz eyes of the most beautiful man I’d ever seen. Vincent smiled shyly, stepped forward, and pulled me into his arms, burying his face in the side of my neck.

“I’ve been an utter fool, Romeo. I’m so sorry for worrying you, love.” He kissed my neck, holding his nose against a throbbing vein there, and I hugged him tightly, unbelievably relieved to have him in my arms again.

“You know you can tell me anything, don’t you?” I asked, breathing in the apple scent of his shampoo and adoring the silky feeling of his hair against my lips. “I know you’ve been out of sorts ever since getting the email a week ago.”

He loosened his grip but didn’t let me go as he leaned back and stared into my eyes. “I thought…” He shook his head slowly. “Well, it doesn’t matter. I was wrong in any case.”

“It matters, Vincent. Whatever it is, it matters. Tell me,” I beseeched. “I’m your mate. You know you’re safe with me as long as you’re honest, Vincent.”

He nodded slowly. “Can we head home now? I’ll tell you all about it later. Right now, all I want to do is spend some time with you.”

I sighed. He was right. I really didn’t want to open a long discussion when all I could think of was getting him naked and under me.

Once upon a time, a bunch of authors wondered... what would happen if Heart2Heart, the dating and community app responsible for bringing together couples from all over the world, encouraged people to do something they’d never done before?

#NeverHaveIEver is trending on H2H, and fourteen authors who’ve never before appeared in a Heart2Heart anthology (and one who’s never left) have come together to show how funny, hot, and heartwarming it can be when H2H app users challenge themselves to do something outside of their comfort zones--from singing in public, to skinny dipping, to getting their first real kiss--while they manage to fall in love along the way.

As always, all proceeds from this anthology will benefit LGBTQ+ charities to ensure that love in all its incarnations will be celebrated and protected every single day of the year!

And don’t forget: this volume of the anthology will only be available for 90 days, after which time it will never be offered again!

Excerpt:

The boy landed in the dirt at my feet with a wince and a sharp inhale. A strange metallic scent coated the back of my tongue along with the pungent odor of his fear. A dark head of hair bent forward and slumped shoulders trembled as he crossed one arm over his chest holding onto the opposite elbow.

“What’s this?” I asked one of my enforcers and friend, Cyder. The only raven shifter in our pack. He and Peyton, a tiger shifter and another of my enforcers, were standing shoulder to shoulder behind where they’d just dumped their quarry. The hothouse around me was full of growth and life, a warm spot in the midst of winter’s chill. The boy looked like he could use a bit of warmth. He had on a thick looking sweater, but there were holes and dirt smears all over him and his feet were bare. I raised my eyes, waiting for an explanation.

“We found this human inside the northern boundary,” Peyton sneered, her booted foot coming up to push at the boy’s rump and send him sprawling forward. His hands shot out, barely saving him from face planting. I understood Peyton had her reasons for hating humans the way she did, but I would not tolerate that sort of treatment to any person, human or otherwise, in our territory.

“Enough,” I growled. “Leave us.”

“Alpha…”

I straightened my spine. Not that I really needed to. At nearly seven feet tall, I towered over everyone in my pack. “I will not repeat myself.”

They both nodded quickly; Cyder gripping Peyton’s elbow like he was afraid she’d object again, and they left without another word.

The boy seemed to realize I was watching him, and for a moment, I thought he’d hunker in on himself even further, but then he huffed a breath and squared his shoulders before climbing slowly to his feet, still holding his arm. As he lifted his chin, a startled look crossed his face as he tilted his head back farther and farther to meet my eyes. Even standing up straight, the top of his head barely reached the middle of my sternum.

Upright, his shoulders were wider than I thought they’d be, and I was surprised to see dark, crinkly hairs sticking out of the tears in the legs of his pants and stubble on his jaw. Not a boy after all.

He had some balls looking an Alpha shifter in the eye, but to my surprise, I was glad he did. Some nameless longing stirred in me as his scent permeated more of the air, mixing with the earthy richness of the soil and pulling at something low in my gut. And to be honest, his eyes were just beautiful. A vivid, almost neon blue surrounded by thick chestnut-colored lashes that matched the untidy mop on his head.

“What’s your name?” I asked, keeping my tone softer than I ever did with anyone else.

He swallowed twice before he answered me. “Matthew.”

Excerpt:

Jase moved. Then he continued to cruise, circling the airport. He wasn’t sure who grew more annoyed; him from the monotony of driving in circles, or the officers who moved toward his car every time he came around the circle only to realize it was Jase again.

After about the tenth ring around the airport, Jase tried to call Andrew. The call went right to voicemail. He continued to make the loop another five times and called again. After another five times, he suffered the same outcome with the call. Andrew must have turned his phone off.

Instead of heading back to the pickup area on his next loop, Jase turned onto the ramp that led to the parking garage. As he stepped out of the car, his stomach growled, reminding him he’d never ordered food when he stopped earlier.

Inside the terminal, Jase bypassed the seating area and headed straight toward the kiosk to grab a snack. While waiting for his food, his thoughts traveled back to the restaurant and the reason he hadn’t had time to order anything. He had been too busy listening to the guy sing. Genuinely impressed, Jase’s thoughts remained on the guy’s voice and the song Jase had never heard before as he finished eating and moved to sit between the exit and baggage claim. He sat for a while before he noticed his boyfriend coming down the escalator.

Jase stood and waved. It stunned him to see Andrew’s smile turn into a sneer when he spotted Jase. Jase ignored it. He figured it had more to do with Andrew being late than anything else.

“Hey, baby, I’m so glad you’re back. I missed you,” Jase said as he moved in to kiss Andrew.

Andrew moved and landed Jase’s kiss onto his cheek instead of the lips where Jase was aiming.

“What happened to the car?” Andrew spoke in a yelling whisper. “Why are you in here?” Andrew’s stiff posture and downturned lips surprised Jase.

“Because you’re late.” Jase didn’t understand what the problem was.

“No, I’m not. They expected to land at nine-forty-five, and it’s exactly nine-fifty.”

Jase blinked, confused. “You told me you planned to land early. At eight.”

“Yeah,” Andrew scuffed. “That didn’t work out. After the pilot mentioned we were running early, he told us it wouldn’t matter because of the air traffic. The plane wasn’t able to land until its allowed spot. Which it did.”

“You didn’t think to call me and tell me this,” Jase said. Still confused, his words came out sounding harsher than he intended.

“I did, but my phone died.” Andrew pulled out his phone as if to show Jase. It was dead. “What could I do, you were already on your way?”

“I’m sure someone had a phone for you to borrow, so I wouldn’t have to wait here for over an hour.” Jase couldn’t believe he even had to say this.

Andrew snorted as he stopped walking. He turned to face Jase, Andrew’s nostrils flared, and his eyes squinted. The back of Jase’s throat burned. He’d fucked up.

Jase went to apologize, for what he wasn’t sure, but Andrew held up his hand, stopping Jase.

“I’m sorry if coming to get me was such an inconvenience.” Andrew spit out the words.

Jase shook his head. “That’s not what I said. Not what I meant. I just—” He tried to apologize again, but Andrew cut Jase off for a second time.

“Next time, I’ll just make sure I arrange for a car to pick me up,” Andrew said and walked away.

Jase stood shocked, trying to figure out what the hell just happened. Then his brain caught up with what was going on, and he ran to catch up with Andrew. Shit. “That’s not necessary.”

Andrew stopped short, and Jase almost crashed into him.

“I could probably arrange for one right now.” Andrew pulled his phone from his pocket. “I’ll just call Renaldo, and he’ll send a car to come for me.”

“How do you plan to call? Your phone’s dead.” The words fell from Jase’s mouth too fast to stop, and he knew, beyond a doubt, that he’d just fucked up. Again. His stomach dropped.

Stories about men who work hard, play hard, and love hard.

About the Author:

L.A. is a contemporary M/M romance author who loves her men to work hard, play hard, and love hard.

She’s always lived in the northeast and has recently stretched her boundaries and moved farther north -- the more relaxed lifestyle giving her more time to write -- in theory anyway.

Among the things she loves besides writing and her family are her friends, those she writes with and those she writes about, reading, games (the kind with boards, not in love), her dogs, Nutella and Bok Choy, and the men and women from the military, past and present, who keep us safe.

When she finds herself stuck at the keyboard, her fingers refusing to move, her characters refusing to talk, she likes to take a break, blast some music, and dance like no one is watching her or sing her heart out into her hairbrush microphone.

She’s living her happily ever after and wants the same for all her characters. L.A. believes love comes in all different packages and each should be wrapped in a ribbon and cherished.

Frat Wars: King Of Thieves
By Saxon James

Frat Wars Audiobook COver

Narrated by Iggy Toma & Alexander Cendese

Frat Wars, Book 1

We’re basically Romeo and Juliet. But dudes. And without all the dying.

Chad
Being VP of Sigma Beta Psi is wild. I get all the benefits of being in charge with hardly any of the responsibility.

Parties, pranks, and frat politics—college life has never been sweeter.

Until I meet Bailey Prince.

He has the face of a goddamn angel. I don’t know where he came from or why I’m so obsessed.

But I do know he’s a Kappa.

And our houses have a rivalry that’s written into legend.

Bailey
At Rho Kappa Tau, I’m a legacy.

It’s a lot of pressure, but I’ve always been responsible, never had that rebellious need to rock the boat, and I like it that way.

But after a party at Sigma—the jock frat—I meet Chad Doomsen, and for the first time in my life I want to step outside my square.

Our houses have always had a rivalry, but some of the guys seem to hate Chad specifically, and I don’t know why.

He’s surprisingly sweet and kind. At least to me.

I need to stay away. A relationship with Chad would be betraying the very legacy that brought me here.

But I can’t help myself. And it seems, neither can he.

Frat Wars is a romance between MCs from rival houses. It has friendly competitions, no hazing, and a swoony romance kept secret.

Excerpt of CHAPTER ONE

Chad

“No, bit higher. Yeah, there you go.”

I watch as the pledges seal the black contact paper over the windows at Rho Kappa Tau. I can already imagine the look on the face of their prez, Charles, when he realizes we’ve outsmarted them.

One day a week, they have their chapter meetings on campus at West Haven University since their house isn’t big enough for all the members to attend, and they always leave some dumbass pledge in charge of watching the house.

Well, he can watch it from where we’ve zip-tied him to the kitchen cabinet.

“This is the shittiest prank ever,” Carter scoffs from his place on top of Raymond’s shoulder.

“Less talk, more focus, pledge.” I smirk. “You’re getting bubbles in it. Have some pride in your work.”

Even though I can’t see his face, I know he’s rolling his eyes as he pulls back the contact paper and reapplies it.

“Seriously though,” Raymond says. “Why this? We could piss on their grill or leave roadkill in their air ducts.”

“First up, both those things are gross. Second, we wanna keep operating on this campus. What did the rules say?”

“No serious fuckery.”

“And?”

“No hazing.”

And?” I prompt.

“Misconduct of a serious nature will result in the suspension of Sigma Beta Psi.”

“Exactly.” I stuff my hands in my pockets as I admire their work. “Plus, we’re not total assholes. We might wanna piss off these guys, but we don’t actually want to go too far.”

“But they’re Kappas,” Carter says like that explains it all.

I grin. “Yeah, but we don’t hold it against them.”

Mostly. One of the first things I learned being initiated as a Sigma was our long-standing rivalry with the Rho Kappa Tau house. It used to be bad, well before rules were brought in on campus about how fraternities could behave. There’re rumors of some really nasty shit like actual assault and sexual abuse, which I don’t want to believe but have a bad feeling might be accurate. Especially if the back room at the Sigma house is anything to go by. It’s only maybe two decades old, whereas the rest of the house was built sometime in the twenties, and our president, Zeke, swears it’s because the Kappas set dynamite to one of the back posts.

Some of the more hard-core brothers long for those days.

But I prefer not having to fear physical injury.

“This will piss them off,” I say, giving more information, since I’m a nice guy. “Ever tried to get sticky shit off a surface? It’ll leave crap all over the windows, and they’ll have to spend hours cleaning that off too.”

“As if,” Raymond says. “The rich bastards will pay someone else to do it instead.”

“Know thy enemy. They might be richer than God, but they believe in hard work, and I’d put my next week’s wages down that they do the cleanup themselves.”

That’s the thing about the Kappas—I want to hate them, but they make it hard.

Our frats couldn’t be more different. They’re the future leaders. Bankers and managers and politicians. Their idea of a good time is an intellectual gang bang, whereas Sigmas don’t count it a weekend unless we’ve done something stupid. They have Beemers; I’m driving a beat-up old station wagon.

Our chapter members are all here on sports scholarships, and nearly all of us are holding down a part-time job on top of coursework and training and frat duties.

Kappas aren’t bad people. They’re just different people.

Carter finishes covering the last window, and I check the time on my phone.

“All right, pack this shit up. They’ll be back any minute.”

I was planning to toss the poor pledge inside some scissors, but his brothers can deal with him when they’re back, which …

The sound of a car pulling up out the front makes me stop. I creep up the side of the house to check, and yep, they’re back early.

“Shit.” I laugh as I jog back to where Carter has jumped down from Raymond’s shoulders. “Back already, let’s go.”

I run for the fence separating Kappa House from the frat next door and hoist myself up over it. The pledges beside me do the same, and as soon as we drop to the other side, we bolt. I fly past two Betas relaxing in a blow-up pool, and neither of them looks shocked to see us.

“Fucking Chad,” one of them calls right before I round the side of their house and make for the street.

Shouts start coming from the Kappa house as I hit the street and take off. The Sigma Beta Psi house is on the complete opposite side of Greek Row to the Kappas. Our houses bookend the street with other frats and sororities in between.

The pledges should easily keep up, but if they can’t, it’s not my problem—they knew what they were getting into. Everyone always wants in on my dumbass ideas until we almost get caught. I swear the Kappas will report us one of these days, but until that happens, I’ll keep having my fun. This is my last year of school, and no way am I going to spend it holed up in my room studying.

Cs still get degrees.

I self-five as I jog across the grass and up the steps at Sigma Beta Psi. I’m panting by the time I reach the porch, and I bend to catch my breath before glancing up at Zeke, who was clearly watching the whole time.

“Done stealing my pledges?” he asks. He’s smiling, which takes the bite out of his words.

Carter and Raymond thunder up the steps behind me, and Zeke immediately drops the smile. “Get your asses inside. We have work to do.”

They hurry to apologize and head inside, way more respectful of Zeke and his authority. As the president, people listen to Zeke. I’m just the shithead VP.

As soon as they’re gone, he laughs. “Wait until they find out it’s their turn to stay sober tonight.”

“I do not miss those shitkicker days.”

Zeke and I rushed together as dumbass freshmen. We’ve been through the ritual of being bottom rung in the house, so I have no sympathy for those guys. We’ve all gotta pay our dues—literally and metaphorically—and if they end up initiated, they’ll be where we are one day.

Living out the best days of our lives.

Before it all goes downhill from here.

Who knows where I’m going to be this time next year? Probably back at home, drowning in student debt that my partial scholarship doesn’t cover, while I struggle to get a job. I’m not good or interested enough in football to go pro, and while I thought studying business would cast my net wide, I still have no goddamn clue what I’m going to do with it.

So until then, head, meet sand.

We walk inside and join the others. The large living room has been almost cleared of furniture. We have thirty people living in the house and another fifty members spread out between off-campus housing and the dorms.

Almost all eighty of us are here, filling out the one room.

“Shut up, you animals,” Zeke calls, making his way over to a spot in front of the fireplace. For some reason, that’s always been considered the head of the room by unspoken agreement.

It takes a minute, but slowly everyone falls silent.

“In a minute, Robbie is going to take you through how the night will run and who’s in charge of what,” Zeke says.

A hum of excitement ripples through the guys waiting. This is our first big party of the semester, and everyone expects that Sigma House will go epic or go home. It’s a good thing Robbie is our social chair this year. He might dress like a dad and have the kind of loud voice that borders on obnoxious, but he’s friendly and fun, so people give him a pass on just about everything.

Being six foot four with two hundred and thirty pounds of fat and muscle probably helps too.

“Yeah, yeah, it’s exciting, but shut up a minute.” Zeke gives everyone a few more seconds. Unlike our president last year, he’s laid-back and only takes the job as seriously as he needs to. “Tonight, pledges, you’re on dry duty. Not a single lick of alcohol, and if your Big catches you breaking the rules, you’re out. No second chances.” Some of the Big Brothers—guys in charge of looking after our pledges and teaching them the ropes—puff out their chests and try to look intimidating. They take this shit seriously. “Because when we party in Sigma House, your job is too important. First, you’ve got to keep people from fucking shit up and getting the dean’s attention—that goes without saying. Second, you keep an eagle eye on those Kappas. See, the rivalry isn’t just a rivalry. It’s a competition. Every year Kappas and Sigmas engage in a game called King of Thieves, and we’re on a three-year winning streak. I’d like to end my time as a Sigma completely undefeated.”

Him and me both. And after spending the whole week before the semester started by helping Zeke go through the house and relabel every item that wasn’t attached, I’ll be pissed if they screw this up for us.

“Everything in the house has a number of points.” He picks up a vase on the top of the fireplace that’s probably been there since the stone ages and points to the number on the bottom. “The small, easy-to-take things have a low score. The big things—like our beds—have an insanely high number. Basically, the harder it is to get something out, the more we reward for it. At Harmony Week in six months’ time, we return what we’ve taken, tally the points, and whoever has the most wins. Got it?”

The pledges hurry to agree, because if they’re still lost, their Bigs will catch them up to speed.

“So tonight, you make sure nothing gets past you. That’s it.”

“No worries, Zeke,” Carter says. “We’ll pat them down on the way out if we have to.”

I can’t see a reason that’ll be necessary, but hey, I appreciate the dedication.

Robbie takes over, and the energy in the room jumps up to a thousand. “Okay, assholes. Rick and Miles—kegs. Get them out back and hooked up. Pledges, start scrubbing, I want this house spotless. It’ll be good practice for the morning when you get to do it all again.” He finger guns them. “We’ve got to get the soundproofing up in the windows and a sweet backdrop for the sorority sisters to snap some pics. You know the rules. The more hotties posting about our party, the more people through the doors at twenty a head.” He points at Brandon. “Once you guys are done, run everything past this killjoy and get his sign-off. We good? Good. Get to it. Oh, and if you’re not costumed the fuck up, you can sit on the front lawn in your briefs all night.”

Brandon shakes his head as he approaches Robbie. “You’re an asshole.”

“Guilty. What’s your point?”

“I’m not a killjoy. I’m the risk manager. If I didn’t put a halt to half the idiotic things you want to do, we’d be shut down by now.”

I’ve heard this argument a million times from all the people who held their roles before them. Social chair and risk manager somehow work together while being completely at odds. Robbie and Brandon have always been complete opposites—from their opinion on the correct length of shorts, to whether elbows on the table should be called in beer pong—and these roles have made the divide between them even deeper.

“Just get it done,” Zeke says. He walks over to me. “Think they’ll be up to it?”

“All we can do is wait and see.”

He rakes a hand through his sandy hair and nods.

“Hey, it’s not like this year is riding on tonight, right?” Except it totally is. If tonight isn’t crazy and word gets out that Sigma House is throwing subpar parties, no one will come to any of the others. Parties are the way we make money and keep the membership dues down. Unlike Kappa, no one here can afford paying any more than we need to, which is why, year after year, we’re known as being the house that knows how to have fun.

It’s the thing that keeps us running.

Zeke groans. “Thanks for that reminder, Doomsen.”

“Hey.” I nudge him. “We’ve got this. The frat’s ours this year, and no Kappa douche is going to make us look stupid.”

Frat first, everything else second.

That will never change.

New Year Not You
by Edie Montreux

New Year 2

Last year, law student Brady Madison's binge drinking left him naked, unconscious, and in trouble with the law. Now 350 days sober and with only two weeks to serve the last twelve hours of community service, Brady's faced with another difficult choice: take an offer from the jerk who took the incriminating pics or spend the remaining hours in jail.

Tate Quinn's snap judgment in Brady's hotel room on New Year's Eve ruined any chance he had of hooking up with Brady. Worse, his parents refuse to pay for another semester of grad school until he makes his mom's New Year's charity event a success.

Tate needs a volunteer to help him herd the cats, er, kids, at the New Year's Eve afternoon party, and Brady has always been good with kids. Can they put aside their past anger and shame for six hours, or will these potential lovers turned enemies resolve to remain enemies in the new year?

New Year Not You is a 55k word enemies to lovers M/M Romance between a recovering alcoholic and a recovering man-child. This novel has an AA sponsor moonlighting as a DJ, a cold war between two moms, and two dudes who are not looking for true love (but find it anyway).

NYNY Teaser 2

Excerpt:

This scene is from Brady's point of view, when he first sees Tate at their friend Sandi's annual holiday party. Before they become enemies, Brady thinks Tate's the most interesting thing at the party and wants to get to know him better.

Brady knew Tate Quinn, more by the sound of his laugh than anything else he remembered. Tate's laughter at his little sister's jokes had given Brady too many impure thoughts as he and his parents sat in the pew in front of the Quinns at church. The thought of sitting there one more Sunday without turning around and kissing him senseless drove Brady to come out to his parents one Sunday before church. Thankfully, his gay card had also been his get out of church free card. No more tempting Tate Quinn and his sexy laugh.

Except now Tate sat down beside him on Sandi's couch and leaned in. "Hey. You're Brady Madison. I remember you."

Tate's breath still smelled minty fresh. Brady guessed toothpaste, not peppermint schnapps.

"Our moms are huge rivals," Brady said. "I'd be surprised if you're even allowed to talk to me. The gay might rub off on you."

"Could it really?" Tate asked, his face way too close for comfort now. The guy had no grasp of personal space. "I would love to rub one off with you, too."

"Wow, dude, that's not what I meant." It answered a question Brady would have never asked, but in an awkward and not at all sexy way.

Tate blinked, and then he laughed. It wasn't the sweet, genuine laugh Brady appreciated from church. No. This laugh was rehearsed for raucous crowds like this one, and it grated Brady's last nerve.

He tried to push his way to his feet, but Tate's hand on his shoulder stopped him.

"Hey. Sorry. I get nervous around local celebrities, okay? Let's try this again."

Tate held out his other hand. "Tate Quinn. My mom's biggest failure. My grades are so bad I'm probably going to flunk out of med school next semester. I have zero friends at this party because I went to Holy Cardinal, and I'm super gay."

Brady couldn't help it. He grinned.

"Nice to meet you, Tate. I'm Brady. Second year law student, but only because I had to retake some courses this year. I sat in front of you at Holy Trinity and I monitored the four-year-old room when your little sister went to Sunny Time daycare. How's she doing?"

"Oh hell no. I am not talking about my little sister when I'm trying to get laid," Tate said.
